The Life of Orphans - Chapter 10

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 10
Zax: Hey, you know tonight the teachers are having a meeting.

Tony: Really? How did you know?

Zax: I overheard it when I passed the teachers' room. I think the students are
not suppose to know this.

Jason: So?

Cyndi: That means I can come over during the night.

Zax: Smart!

Jason: But you always come over during the night.

Cyndi: I always come in like a thief but this time, I can stay longer.

Sam: Then you should come over right after dinner.

Cyndi: I have to go back first to show my face to the prefects. They must be
extra careful because there are no teachers around.

Tony: I agree with that.

That night, Cyndi was on the way to the boys’ room when...

Ray: Hi.

Cyndi: Uh? Hello.

Ray: Where are you going?

Cyndi: There’s nothing to do with you.

Ray: Really? Let me guess.... you are going to those failures' room huh?

Cyndi: Why should you care anyway? They are not failures, if they are, then
you are the biggest one!

Ray: You look cute when you are angry. (Strokes her face)

Cyndi: Get your hands off me!

Ray: You are smart and pretty too. Why mix with those failures? You can come to my room instead.

Cyndi: No thanks. And don't call them failures!! For your information, they
are a million times better than you!

Ray: (pushed her towards the wall) No one ever talks to me like that! You better not say that I didn't treat you well before.

At the boys side,

Zax: What is taking her so long?

Tony: Yep, she should be here minutes ago.

Jason: Will she be in trouble?

Sam: I think we better go and check.

All: (Nods)

Sam: Jason, you better stay here. In case she comes.

Jason: Alright.

Tony: Let's go.

They went out and follow the route, which leads to the Cyndi's room. They
didn't see Cyndi anywhere until they heard....

Cyndi: Let go! Or I’ll scream!

Ray: Haha, scream all you like. You should have known that there are no teachers now. If the prefects come, whom do you think they will listen to? You or me?

Zax: What do you think you are doing?

Ray: Oh, the failures have arrived.

Sam: You let go of her! (Pushed him away)

Ray: So, you failures want to play rough. (Called his "followers")

They all started fighting; Ray and his friends weren't a match for them, so
they ran off.

Zax: Whom do you call failures now?

Tony: Zax, Cyndi (turned to Cyndi).

Zax: oh, yes.

Sam: Are you ok?

Cyndi: (nodded. her eyes were wet, it seems that she had cried before. Her wrists where bruised because of Ray's strong grip. Her lips were bleeding a little)

Tony: Let's take her back.

Sam took of his jacket and put it over Cyndi.

At the room,

Jason: Wow! What happened?

Tony: (looked at Cyndi) We'll tell you later.

Sam: (wipe the blood of her lip) Are you feeling ok?

Cyndi: (didn't answer, sniffs a little)

Sam: It's ok now. (Strokes her hair)

Tony: I think she'd better stay here tonight.

Zax: I agree. In case those cowards are waiting for her there.

Tony: Then we'll report this first thing in the morning.

Cyndi: No, you can't report.

Sam: Why not?

Cyndi: If we report, he'll also report that you guys were fighting. That will get all of you into big trouble.

Zax: Nothing will happen to us. He's the one who's in trouble.

Cyndi: His mom is a teacher. If he whines a little, whom do you think they will believe?

Tony: But it's not fair to you.

Cyndi: I don't mind.

Jason: Let's talk about this tomorrow.

Zax: Wait! What if he reports first?

Cyndi: He won't, trust me.

Zax: if you say so.

Jason: We'll go now, ok?

Cyndi: Ok.

After they left,

Sam: Is it painful? (Holds her wrist)

Cyndi: (shook her head)

Sam hands a drink to her,

Cyndi: Thanks.

Sam: You don't have to be scared anymore. Just lie down and close your eyes.

Cyndi: What about you?

Sam: Me? I'm a guy; I can sleep on the floor. Now, just don't worry about anything. Go to sleep, ok?

Cyndi: (obeyed)

Sam pulls up the blanket and put her hand into the blanket.

Sam: Oh my God! Her hands are freezing.

Sam rubs his hands with her's to make them warm again.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 9

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 9
After class,

Teacher: Cyndi, can you come with me?

Cyndi: Ok. (Turns to Jason) You go ahead first.

Jason: What did you do?

Cyndi: No idea. I'll find out soon.

Jason: Good luck.

Cyndi: I'm not going to die, you know.

Teacher: Come on, Cyndi.

In the teacher's room,

Teacher: Cyndi Wang, do you know that the end year exam is just around the
corner?

Cyndi: Yes, I do.

Teacher: I was looking through your report card and I found something very interesting.

Cyndi: Really?

Teacher: Since you were in high school your results run in a very strange rotation.

Cyndi: Meaning?

Teacher: Our school has four exams in a year. Your results in the first three
exams were outstanding but when it comes to the end year exam, your results will suddenly drop. May I know why?

Cyndi: The end year exam's questions are usually harder than the ones before, it's not strange.

Teacher: But this happens every year. You can't tell me that it's hard every year?

Cyndi: It is.

Teacher: That doesn't make sense. You know that the end year exam are the most important exam throughout the whole year, it will decide what class you are going to be in next year. With your first three exam's results, you are certainly qualified to be in the first class.

Cyndi: That's why. Because my results during the first three exams were good, I got over-confidence and seldom study. That’s the reason why my results drop.

Teacher: If you have any problems, you can share it with me. I might be able to help you.

Cyndi: No, nothing's wrong.

Teacher: I know that you are an orphan and you may have some problems that you can't settle by yourself. Maybe I can help you.

Cyndi: No. Really. There's no problem at all. It’s just a coincidence.

Teacher: Ok, since you don't want to talk about it, I won't force you. But you can tell me when you are ready to share.

Cyndi: Ok teacher, I’ll tell you, as soon I know what's wrong. (Nodding)

Teacher: Ok, you can go now.

Cyndi: Thanks. (Runs off)

The teacher sitting on the opposite heard everything and said

Teacher B (can't think of anything else): That's Cyndi Wang right?

Teacher A (Cyndi's Form teacher, the one talking to her just now): Yes.

Teacher B: She's a strange student. I was her class teacher last year.

Teacher A: I just don't understand. If she did well in her end year exams, she will certainly be top student.

Teacher B: She's an orphan; we won't understand their thoughts since we are not.

Teacher A: I guess you are right. I just hope she will change.

Well, someone overheard the conversation between Cyndi and her teacher and the conversation between the two teachers. He quickly walked out to catch up with Cyndi.

Sam (ahh.. I revealed the answer): Cyndi!

Cyndi: Hello, Sam.

Sam: Have time to talk?

Cyndi: Umm... Ok.

Sam: I heard everything.

Cyndi: Huh?

Sam: At the teacher room just now.

Cyndi: Oh that. So?

Sam: What is the problem?

Cyndi: Since you heard everything. You should have heard my answer.

Sam: I know you since you were a kid, I can tell whether you are lying or not.

Cyndi: Wow, you are creepy. You know when I lied to you?

Sam: Don't change the topic. We were friends since we were kids. We are even closer than our own family. I think there's nothing you can't share with me.

Cyndi: Of course we are closer than our families.

Sam: Are you going to answer my question?

Cyndi: Ok, fine. I did that because I want to be in the same class with Jason.

Sam: Jason? You mean you like Jason?

Cyndi: What do you mean? He's my only friend in class.

Sam: Oh, nothing. (Relieved) Don't you have other friends?

Cyndi: Apart from the four of you, I don't think so.

Sam: What!

Cyndi: What so surprising? I don't mind. You guys are enough as friends or family.

Sam: But you are a smart girl. Don't you think it's a waste if you do that?

Cyndi: Don't worry. I'll do better during my "hui kao" {an exam which you take
when you are in form 5}

Sam: You will have a bright future if you study well.

Cyndi: That one, I know.

Sam: I didn't know that you were so smart.

Cyndi: That means you don't know me well enough.

Sam: Oh really? Or is that because you always make up that your exam results were very bad and don't want to talk about it?

Cyndi: I thought you said you'd always know when I lied?

Sam: Of course, I do. I just don't want to break your lies and make you embarrassed.

Cyndi: Hah! Lame excuse. (Hits him at the back of the head and runs)

Sam: Ouch! I'll get you for this! (Chase after her)

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 8

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 8

Tony: Zax was absent today.

Cyndi: So?

Tony: Do you mind to go and check on him to see what is wrong?

Cyndi: Why me? Can't you call Jason?

Jason: We have basketball practice.

Cyndi: [Basketball again, is that all you guys think about?] Fine.

Sam: We'll go over as soon as the practice is over.

Cyndi: You'd better be.

So, I went to Zax's room and knocked the door but no one answered.

Cyndi: (knocking the door) Zax! It's me, Cyndi. [What is he doing in there?]

I tried to peek in through the window but the curtains were closed.

Cyndi: Maybe something went wrong.

I went to the back of his room and opened the window then climbed through. I saw Zax was lying in bed and his face was pale. So, I went over.

Cyndi: Zax, are you ok? (He didn't wake)

I feel his forehead and jerked up at once.

Cyndi: Wow! You are boiling!

I quickly wetted a small towel and put it on his forehead. Then I rushed out to the school doctor for some fever medicine. I came back to Zax's room and change the towel. The towel was indeed warm. If I put a kettle on him it may boil.

A while later, Zax woke.

Cyndi: So, you are at last, awake.

Zax: You have been here all the while?

Cyndi: Of course I was. If it's not for me, you might have already died.

Zax: Come on, I’m sick here. Stop the cursing.

Cyndi: Sorry.

Zax: It's ok.

Cyndi: By the way, are you hungry? You didn't eat anything since morning, right?

Zax: No problem. I'm not hungry.

Cyndi: You must eat something. Wait for me, I’ll be right back. (Ran out)

Zax: Wow! Is it because that I’m sick or what, why is my heart beating so
furiously? I can't be in love with her; she's like a sister to me. Although we are not really a family... Ahh! All this thinking is giving me a headache! (Lies down and closes his eyes)

A few minutes later,

Cyndi: Ummm.... Zax? (Tapping him)

Zax: Uh?

Cyndi: I brought you some porridge, after you finish this, you can take your medicine and then go back to sleep, ok?

Zax: Ok.

Cyndi: How is it?

Zax: Not bad.

Cyndi: Good, that means you still can taste.

After Zax had his medicine,

Cyndi: Ok, now you can go to sleep.

Zax: But I’m not tired.

Cyndi: No, no, no, you are sick, you must rest. (Pulls up his blanket)

Zax: Come on, I slept enough already. I might not be able to sleep at night.

Cyndi: Fine, fine. (Feel his forehead) It's not so hot anymore.

Zax: Of course, I’m a strong guy.

Cyndi: Hah! Since you are ok now, I think I’ll go back now.

Zax: No!

Cyndi: Why?

Zax: [I don't want her to, I want her to stay a little longer. What should I say?]

Cyndi: Yes?

Zax: Uh? Oh, it's going to be boring if I’m alone here.

Cyndi: Oh, I see. I'll go and change then I’ll come back, ok?

Zax: Ok.

After Cyndi left,

Zax: I can't be. I can't be in love with her! I always quarrel with her since we
were kids. No way, no way. (Turn over and saw the photo which the five of them took when Jason and Cyndi was graduated from primary school) Those were the good old days.

Later that day, Sam, Tony and Jason came back from practice.

Sam: How are you?

Zax: As strong as a horse.

Cyndi: Oh really?

Tony: What's his problem?

Cyndi: Someone got high fever today. (Singsong voice)

Jason: Oh, the strong horse is sick.

Zax: Even a great big elephant can get sick.

Tony: Anyway, here's today's homework.

Zax: Aw... I’m sick here; can't I take a leave from homework?

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 7

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 7
Zax: Wow! The cheerleaders are practicing. Let's go look!

Sam: When there are pretty girls around, you'll always be the first one who saw it.

Cyndi: I agree. His eyesight wasn't so good before.

Zax: You guys want to go see or not? If not, I’ll go by myself.

Cyndi: Who said no.

Everyone walk over except Tony,

Cyndi: Hey Tony, aren't you going?

Tony: Ummm...

Cyndi: Come on. (Took Tony's hand)

Holding hands seems nothing since they are all so close but when Cyndi holds his hand he felt that his heart was beating very fast.

Tony: (blush)

Zax: Oye! What happened to you?

Tony: What?

Zax: You're blushing. Haha. What the problem? Shy of looking at the
cheerleaders?

Tony: No, I’m not. (Covering his face) Just watch what you are suppose to
watch.

Zax: Yep, don't want to miss anything.

Tony took a glimpse at Cyndi who was tiptoeing over the crowd to watch.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 6

The Life or Orphans

Chapter 6

Well, I’m now walking to Sam's room. The two so-call brothers ditched me because they wanted to go for the basketball practice. A good thing that Sam is not practicing today or else I’ll be all alone this afternoon and that's what I always hate.

I reached Sam's room and knocked at his door, Sam opened the door.

Sam: Hi, only you? Where are the others?

Cyndi: They ditched me.

Sam: Oh, poor thing. Come in.

Cyndi: Thanks.

We chatted along until its dinnertime.

During dinner,

Zax: That Ray, just because he's a teacher's son he thinks he can control the whole team; he's not even good in basketball. He just gets to join because of his mom. Urgh!

Cyndi: What did he do?

Tony: he criticizes our basketball technique saying that if we continue playing like that we won't win anything.

Sam: He kind of crossed the line this time.

Zax: Not only that... He said... Never mind.

Cyndi: What?

Sam: Since he doesn’t want to mention it, let him be.

Cyndi: Ok.

After dinner,

Cyndi: Can I go over to your room today? They seem to be in a bad mood.

Sam: Ok.

Cyndi: Thanks.

Tony: So?

Zax: What?

Tony: I mean where are we going now.

Cyndi: Back to your own rooms. You guys must have been tired after the practice. Besides, (whispers to Tony) Zax will want some time of his own to cool down.

Tony: Ok, we'll go back to our rooms.

Jason: Fine with me. I have loads of homework to do.

Yeah, yeah. I can be with Sam all alone again. I don't know why I just like to have him by my side. I feel so protected if he's with me. Well, I have this feeling since I was small. Well, who cares what feeling is that.

(Author): Since Cyndi's an orphan; she doesn’t really understand the meaning of love, the reason is... no one will explain it to her although she asked them (the guys) a hundred times! =D
