The Life of Orphans - Chapter 35

That night,

In Zax's room (school),

Zax: You were always smart. Can't you think of anything?

Cyndi: You come up to me all of a sudden and ask me to think about an excuse
for breaking up with me, and you want a good one?

Zax: Uh-huh.

Cyndi: Just say I dumped you.

Zax: Reason?

Cyndi: Since I’m the one dumping you, you won't know the reason so just say you
don't know.

Zax: It's better to put you at fault.

Cyndi: Hah! I'm not going to be the bad guy here. Think yourself then.

Zax: Ok, ok, fine. I'm the bad guy.

Cyndi: Since you are the bad guy, then everything is simple. Just say you liked
another girl.

Zax: You know how much my dad likes you. He'll kill me if I say that!

Cyndi: Maybe he will like Rainie more?

Zax: That's just a maybe.

Cyndi: But I want to sleep.

Zax: Sleep all you want after helping me think of something.

Cyndi: Sigh. (Yawns) Some friend I have.

The next morning,

Cyndi ended up sleeping in Zax's room all night.

Cyndi woke up and saw Zax sleeping on the chair.

Cyndi: why am I here? Oh yeah, he pulled me in here to help think for
ideas. Sigh. I'll just go change now.

She opened the door and met someone ....

Sam: Cyndi?

Cyndi: Uh? Oh, Good morning, Sam.

Sam: You just came out from Zax's room.

Cyndi: Yeah. Oh no! It's not what you are thinking.

Tony: What thing?

Cyndi: [Oh no, not another one]

Tony: Cyndi! What are you doing here in your pajamas? Don't tell me... (Eyed
Zax's room)

Cyndi: No! Nothing happened!

Tony: Come on, it's ok. We can accept.

Cyndi: No, no, no. Urgh! Never mind. I'll go change first.

After Cyndi ran off,

Tony: Our little Cyndi is getting older now.

Sam: ...

Tony: Hello?

Sam: Huh? What?

Tony: What your problem?

Sam: Nothing. I'm not hungry now. I’ll skip breakfast. You go along without me.
(Walk back to his room)

Tony: Ok. Weird. Now... I’ll go wake Jason.

Sam walked back to his room,

Sam: Why am I acting like this? Do I really have feelings for her?

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 34

On the volleyball tournament day,

Zax: I know you'll win.

Rainie: I sure hope so.

Zax: You will after all the hard work you did the past few days.

Rainie: Well, I guess so. Wish me luck.

Zax: Good luck.

After the tournament,

Zax: Haha. See I told you so.

Rainie: (smiles) I guess so.

Zax: Can I have a look?

Rainie: Sure (hand over the trophy)

Zax: (instead of the trophy, Zax grabbed her hand) There's something I always
wanted to say.

Rainie: Uh?

Zax: From the first day I met you, I think I have fallen for you.

Rainie: (stunned for words)

Zax: So, could you spare me a chance?

Rainie: I... I... don't know.

Zax: Is that a yes or a no?

Rainie: Umm....

The tournament was over and all the spectators have gone, Rainie's teammates went to the nearby restaurant to celebrate.

Zax: There's no one here. You don't have to be shy.

Rainie: I... (Nodded)

Zax: You nodded? Is that a yes?

Rainie: (nod again)

Zax: Another nod that means yes! Yes!

Rainie: Shh... Not so loud.

Zax: Who cares, there's no one here.

Rainie: Umm... Can I say something?

Zax: Huh? Anything.

Rainie: I'm kind of hungry right now.

Zax: Oh. I'm sorry. Are you going to eat with your friends?

Rainie: They can do without me.

Zax: Ok. I know there's a restaurant with good food.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 33

Sam: Doesn't Zax need company?

Cyndi: What? Even you think like that!

Sam: Why? Isn't it like that?

Cyndi: Not really.

Sam: Had a quarrel, didn't you?

Cyndi: [Do I have to do this?!] Yeah.

Sam: What did he do to you?

Cyndi: Nothing. (Looks at her watch) Hey, lunch break.

Sam: So?

Cyndi: Lunch!

Sam: I told Tony to send my lunch over.

Cyndi: You are working during lunch hours?

Sam: Yes. This is going to be my permanent job after my results are out.

Cyndi: You really don't want to continue your studies?

Sam: What's the point of continuing if I’m not really good at it? By the way, I’m
earning for you.

Cyndi: Me? Why?

Sam: We have all agree to keep the money we earn from our job for further
studies. Since I’m not going to continue mine, I’m saving it for you.

Cyndi: Really? If you think it's a bother, I can find a job myself.

Sam: If I mind that, I’ll be sure to not tell you this and push you to find a job.

Cyndi: I can I want me to. It's you guys who don't allow me to work.

Sam: Of course, you are a girl and we don't need that much money.

Cyndi: Why? Girls are not supposed to work?

Sam: It's just not safe.

Tony: Lunch!

Sam: Ahh... at last.

Tony: Am I late?

Sam: You didn't promise me a time, so I guess you're not.

Tony: I save your lunch for last because I thought I could hang around longer.

Cyndi: Am I invisible?

Tony: Oh, hi. Why are you here?

Cyndi: Because I’m bored?

Tony: Isn't Zax around?

Cyndi: He has nothing to do with me.

Tony: Huh?

Sam: (whisper to Tony) They quarreled.

Tony: oh, no wonder.

Cyndi: What?

Tony: Nothing.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 32

Zax's room,

Zax was dressing himself while humming a tune,

Zax: Hmm... Rainie... she's so cute when she smiles.

At school, the three of them (Tony, Sam and Jason) are off to work leaving Cyndi
alone in her room.

Cyndi: What can I do today? They should have some programmes at school
during the holidays. Oh yeah, I remember there is the volleyball team practice
today although I don't really know much about volleyball but it's better than
doing nothing.

Cyndi headed to the volleyball court and saw someone she never thought she would meet.

Cyndi: Zax? What are you doing here?

Zax: Can't I be here?

Cyndi: I'm asking what are you doing here not why are you here, Dumbo!

Zax: Same as you.

Cyndi: You never change.

Cyndi noticed that throughout the practice, Zax and Rainie was smiling at each
other every ten minutes.

Cyndi: Oye! New target?

Zax: what are you talking about?

Cyndi: Don't lie; it's only you and me here.

Zax: So?

Cyndi: Good taste. She's pretty.

Zax: Of course, I always have good taste.

Cyndi: (pretend to puke) You? Good taste? Hah!

Zax: Maybe when I asked you to be my "girlfriend", I was too desperate.

Cyndi: What do you mean?

Zax: Nothing. (Looking innocent)
Cyndi: Wait! Since you found your new target, can I quit being your girlfriend?

Zax: Not yet.

Cyndi: Why aren't you letting me go?

Zax: Just be more patience just for a little longer.

Cyndi: How long? It's take ages for you to chase her, and maybe you might fail.
=P

Zax: We'll see.

Cyndi: Fine. We'll see.

After the practice,

Rainie: I didn't know that you really mean to show up.

Zax: I promised you right?

Rainie: I didn't really take that as a promise. By the way, who your friend?

Zax: Oh, this is Cyndi.

Rainie: Hi, i'm Rainie Yang.

Cyndi: Cyndi Wang. Nice to meet you.

Rainie: Cyndi Wang? You are top of your whole form, right?

Cyndi: Umm... Ye... Yeah.

Rainie: The whole school is talking about you. Your results were a great surprise.

Cyndi: Really?

Zax: (trying to get Rainie's attention back to him) Rainie, where are you going later?

Rainie: Umm... Nowhere.

Zax: Had breakfast?

Rainie: Had a light one but I’m now a little hungry after the practice.

Zax: Me too. Do you mind having it together?

Rainie: Sure. Cyndi, want to join us?

Cyndi: Umm... I have eaten. You two go ahead.

Zax: Ok, then. See you.

They went off.

Cyndi: Looks like I’m alone again. I'll go visit the others at work.

At Zax's side,

Zax: so you really like volleyball?

Rainie: Yup, I love it. Do you play?

Zax: Volleyball? Not really, I play basketball.

Rainie: Oh, basketball is nice too.

Zax: What else do you like?

Rainie: You mean hobbies?

Zax: Uh.. yes.

Rainie: I don't really have any other except volleyball.

Zax: Oh, ok. You are training for a tournament right?

Rainie: Yes. It's day after tomorrow.

Zax: I'll be cheering for you.

Rainie: Thanks. (smiled)

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 31

Tony: Isn't anyone off today?

Sam: At least I’m not.

Jason: Me too.

Tony: Can't one of you take a leave for my sake? (puppy-dog eyes)

Sam: Nope, you know I’m graduating soon and I must have more money to
support my living before I found a stable job after my results are out.

Tony: ok, I understand. I'm a really considerate person. What about you, Jason?

Jason: Since you are so considerate, i should know that the restaurant has loads
of customers during the school holidays and they are short of waiters.

Sam: Wow! The longest sentence of the day. I must write that down. Repeat it.

Jason: Cut that. (Smacks Sam's head)

Sam: Hey! That hurts!

Tony: Oye! What about me?

Sam: What about you?

Tony: Isn't there anyone who is willing to sacrifice for me?

Jason: Maybe Cyndi will. I have not seen her since breakfast.

Sam: She's been out early and back late these few days. Wonder what's up with
her?

Tony: Does that mean that the both of you are going to work?

Sam: Or else?

Tony: You two are going to thank me for this... It's 8:07 a.m. cock-a-doodle-doo,
the both of you are seriously LATE!

Jason: Oh no! Gotta go.

Sam: Me too. Bye.

Tony: Some friends you two are. Leaving me alone here.

Cyndi: Nobody told you to take a leave today.

Tony: Why are you here?

Cyndi:Why can't I be here?

Tony: No dating today?

Cyndi: What makes you think that I’m dating?

Tony: You've not been seen for ages then.

Cyndi: I'm here now.

Tony: So?

Cyndi: I heard someone needs company here.

Tony: Is that your Zax?

Cyndi: He's not MINE!

Zax: What's the screaming for?

Tony: Hey, why are you here?

Zax: For your information, I live here.

Tony: Oh yeah I almost forgot. Or you are here for someone?

Zax: Who?

Tony: (eyed Cyndi) Someone....
Zax: Her? I see her everyday. I don't mind that. But today I’m here to visit some
friends.

Cyndi: (hit Zax) Don't crap.

Tony: (shivers) Excuse me, I’m still here.
Cyndi: You don't start thinking. We are definitely not what you are thinking.

Zax: Why not?

Cyndi kicked him furiously.

Zax: Ouch!

Tony: Wow! Cyndi, I thought girls in love are supposed to be gentle.

Cyndi: I'm not in LOVE!

Tony: I just don't understand why you don't want to admit it.

Cyndi: Because I didn't do anything, why should I admit?

Tony: It's not a secret already, you know?

Cyndi: Fine, whatever. I'm going out. See you guys later.

Tony: (after Cyndi left) What's up with the two of you? Fighting?

Zax: No idea. She's kind of moody these few days.

Tony: Then you should make her happy.

Zax: (mutters) She won't be happy until she's out of this.

Tony: Out of what?

Zax: Nothing. Let's go walk around.

As they were walking around the school compound, they saw the volleyball team
were practicing and it was the girls team.

Zax: Is that the captain? (Pointing to one of the players)

Tony: I guess so she's directing and training them.

Zax: [She's pretty.]

Tony: Hello? You can't afford to look at girls now, you know?

Zax: Why?

Tony: Because you have Cyndi. And if you hurt her none of us will let you go.

Zax: Fine. [Wonder what's her name?]

Tony: I'll go get a drink. You want some?

Zax: Ok. I'll wait for you here.

Zax at the side of the volleyball court.

Player 1: Is it my turn to go on court?

Captain: Yes. Now give it your best shot.

Player 1: Ok.

As the ball flying near to player 1, she hit it with all her might...

Player 1: Ouch!

Captain: Are you ok?

Player 1: My wrist!

Captain: Oh no. Someone please accompany her to the school clinic.

After player 1 and another player left.

Player 2: Rainie, what if she's badly hurt and can't play? The game is two days
away now and we can't do without her.

Rainie (captain): I know. Let's just hope that she's alright. Ok guys, that's all for
today.

As Rainie was taking her backpack, she didn't notice that it was not zipped, all
her belongings fell out.

Rainie: Man! (She knelt down and pick up her things)

Zax quickly went up and help her.

Rainie: Thanks.

Zax: Not at all. My name is Zax. You?

Rainie: Rainie.

Zax: [Cute name] Umm... can we be .... friends?

Rainie: Sure. You can always come and see us practice.

Zax: I will.

Rainie: See you.

Zax: Ok. When is the next practice?

Rainie: Tomorrow! 9 in the morning.

Zax: Ok. I'll be here 9 sharp.

Rainie smiled in return.

Tony came back with two cans in his hand.

Tony: Whom are you smiling to? (Looking at the direction Zax looking but saw
nothing)

Zax: Huh? Nobody.

Tony: You must be crazy.
