Janet
rolled up her letter and tied it onto Alpha’s leg, gave him a hug before
sending off from the window of the Ravenclaw common room.
“Good morning.”
Janet jumped with shock, she did not expect
anybody to be up this early on a Saturday.
It was Su Li, she was sitting on the couch
with a book on her lap. Her straight long hair lay neatly over her shoulder and
her fringe lands directly over her eyebrows, shaping her oval face nicely almost
covering her small black eyes that contrasts her fair skin. She would usually
be seen following Mandy around with Morag, like her loyal minions.
“Good morning,” Janet greeted back. “You’re
up early.”
“You too. I want to study some English, the
teachings here are all in English. My English needs to improve so that I can
catch up,” Su explained.
“Oh, but you are speaking quite well
already,” Janet sat down on the couch in front of Su.
“No, my English is not good. I cannot
really understand what the teacher says,”
“I see. You’re not from London?”
“I
was living in China before my family came back beginning of this year. My
parents both studied in Hogwarts so we came back here so I could study in
Hogwarts too,” Su explained enthusiastically, nobody has ever talked to her
about herself since her first day in Hogwarts, since she spends most of her
time with Mandy, who clearly was not interested about any matter but herself. “Because
I hardly speak English at home, so it is quite hard for me to catch up with
homework when I only understand a little bit of what the teacher is teaching.”
“But you were doing well. You managed to
turn the match into a needle in Transfiguration.” Janet said.
“Really? You saw…”
“Yes, I saw you turn it into a needle
before Mandy exchanged hers with yours and I think your English is ok. You just
need more practice, just talk to people, I reckon that will help.”
“I can talk to you?” Su asked hopefully.
“Er… Of course you can, but wouldn’t you
want to talk to Mandy or Morag?” Although Janet started to grow fond of Su but
she does not want to cross Mandy or give her the idea that she is stealing her
friend or rather her loyal minion away.
“I hardly talk to Mandy. She usually does the
talking, me and Morag will just listen,” Su said while looking down on the
carpet, avoiding Janet’s eye, her lack of confidence in English has also
contributed to the fact that she hardly spoke. This was actually the first time
Janet actually heard her voice.
After listening to Su, Janet disliked Mandy
even more. Since the first day, Mandy has not talked about anything but
herself, she has portrayed herself as the self-proclaimed popular girl who was
also a rich spoiled brat who thinks that she is good at everything and always
gets what she wants while everyone will have to listen to her.
“I think you should have not let Mandy step
over you during Transfiguration, it was you who managed to turn the match into
a needle perfectly but you let her take your needle and the credit.” As she
spoke, Janet recalled their first night at Hogwarts in front of the Ravenclaw
common room entrance where Mandy shouted her answer to the riddle. Mandy did
reminded her of those rich, popular girls who Janet and Anna have sworn to
avoid which they go to Queen Anne’s, as these girls would usually bully students
who were too scared to stand up for themselves just for the sake of self-amusement
and to show that they are the ones in charge. The thought of Anna struck Janet
like a needle through her heart, it was painful.
“It is ok. She is not stepping on me.” Su
replied. Mandy was the first person who invited her to join her “clique”, since
then Su became loyal to Mandy as a friend and she is willing to do anything for
her. Although Mandy invited Su to join in the first place was because she would
listen to her stories with awe while others will just play deaf.
“Well, if you don’t mind then it is up to
you,” Janet sighed, feeling disappointed that someone so clever would just let
herself be bullied. Trying to shake away her thoughts about Anna, she decided
to go back to sleep and wake up later for breakfast.
“Where are you going to go?” Su asked
seeing Janet stood up from the couch.
“Back to sleep. Enjoy your book,” Janet
answered dully and walks through the door back to the girls’ dormitory before
Su could open her mouth again.
