1. Harry Potter (Panda's version) - Featuring Janet Hayden - Chapter 12

The Haydens stops in front of a tiny, grubby-looking pub and an old, dusty, faded sign written Leaky Cauldron right on top of the entrance. Janet’s mind immediately filled with questions. Everything she needs are sold here? There is a bookshop right beside the pub, that place seems more likely as a bookshop for spell books; the record shop on the other side also seems more like a shop that sells records as a cover for cauldrons and wands but her parents head straight into Leaky Cauldron without even looking at other shops.
The Haydens walk into the pub and head straight out from the other door. This instance, more questions burst out in Janet’s mind. Why did they come in if they were heading out in the first place?
They reach a walled courtyard. Janet looks around curiously but there was nothing around except a dustbin and some weeds. Feeling quite confident that the dustbin must be the entrance of the place wherever they are heading, Janet did not notice that her father has triggered something to make the wall open into an archway. Janet looks up from the dustbin and saw the archway leads to a cobbled street that twisted and turned out of sight.
“What has just happened? How did the wall opened?” Janet gasped.
“We are here! Diagon Alley!” David exclaim with excitement.
“It has been such a long time.” Emily said while looking around the familiar street.
“It does not look like an alley though. Did you use magic to open the wall?” Janet asked, looking puzzled but was soon distracted by the shops all arund Diagon Alley.
“Where should we start?” David looks excitedly at his wife.
Emily, who appears to be unaffected by the excitement of being back in Diagon Alley answered, “I think we should get her uniform.”
“Madam Malkin’s, it is. Let’s go, Janet!” David pulls Janet who was staring as a moving sign towards a shop called “Madam Malkin’s Robes for all occasions”.
Janet walks in nervously and is made to stand on a stool while a squat, smiling witch dressed all in maure throws a long robe over her and starts measuring and pinning.
After that, Janet was steered around Diagon Alley by her parents while absorbing their explanation and description about the shops they were heading into. Stuffed with information, Janet now knows that Flourish and Botts is a bookshop, the books sold there have pictures that move; Gringotts is a bank, a wizard bank where her parents have emptied their vault before going into muggle-hood so now, they are going to put some of their money back into their vault.
The Haydens got Janet her school books, cauldron, phials, quills and ink, almost everything she needed for Hogwarts.
“What else do we need, Emily?” David ask while holding her daughter’s shoulders ready to steer her off to their next destination.
“We should now get the most important thing, her wand.” Emily saw her daughter’s eyes shine after she mentioned the word “wand”, she knew that she has been looking forward to having her very own wand ever since she knew it exists.
     “Then, it’s Olivanders. Let’s go.”
They reach a narrow and shabby shop with peeling gold letters over the door that read “Olivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C.” A single wand lay on a faded purple cushion in the dusty window. Feeling excited, Janet push open the door, the sound of a bell tinkled into the depths of the shop as they walk in. Thousands of narrow boxes that Janet assumes are wand boxes stacked up like walls in the shop.
“Good morning.” A soft voice followed by the outline of a man appeared from the boxes.
“Good morning, Mr Olivander.” David greets back.
“Ah, look who we have here. David Hayden, pine, dragon heartstring 12 inches, sensitive and mysterious. I believe you have done a lot of remarkable spell work with your wand.”
“Yes, it has never failed me.” David gripped his wand confidently like a loyal friend who has always been there for him.
Olivander turns to Emily, “Emily Brightlin, rowan, unicorn tail, 11 inches, Strong and just, absolutely reliable when performing defensive charms.”
     Emily smiled back.
“And who do we have here?” Olivander turn and look at Janet.
“This is my daughter, Janet. She is going to Hogwarts this September.” Emily explained.
“Oh, young lady, which is your wand arm?” Olivander asked.
Unable to get what Olivander was asking, Janet returned a puzzled look, “Er…”
“He means your writing hand.” Emily whispered.
“Oh.” Janet holds out her right hand while Olivander carried out a series of measuring and dropped a few long boxes onto his worktable.
“Let’s see. Redwood, phoenix feather, 10 inches, give it a wave.”
Janet took hold of the wand and gave it a flick. Wondering if something should be happening, Olivander took the wand away and place another into her hand. “Cherry, unicorn tail, 10 and a half inches. Let’s see what it does.”
Janet flicked again, feeble sparks burst out and Olivander snatches the wand away again much to Janet’s surprise.
“I think I know, you are like your parents. This will do the trick, black walnut, unicorn tail, 12 and a quarter inches.” Olivander pushes the wand into Janet’s hand, without having to move her hand, the wand shot pink sparks that bursts into red and yellow fireworks.
“Ah, yes. The wand has found its master. Black Walnut seeks a master of good instincts and powerful insight, loyal with particular flair in charmwork.”
After Olivanders, the Haydens head to the  Eeylops Owl Emporium to get an owl so that they could keep in touch with Janet while she is in Hogwarts.
The emporium smelt strongly of owl droppings and the hoots and screeches of the owls surround the whole place like a surround sound system.
Janet look around curiously, she have never seen so many owls at once in her whole life. She caught a glimpse of a small brown owl perched at a corner looking pretty lonely.
“See anything interesting, Janet?” David whispered into Janet’s ear.
“The small one over there,” Janet points at the brown owl.
“Oh, that little fellow.” A chirpy young wizard popped up of nowhere. “We are not sure of its breed. I think it is somewhere between a Brown and a Scoop because it looks like a Brown but it is just half the size of one and slightly larger than normal scoop owls.” The chirpy young wizard explained while bringing the owl over to Janet. “He has been here for a while, poor thing. People would prefer a full size Brown for its strength or a Scoop for their speed. As you can see it is stuck somewhere in the middle.”
“Then, I want this one.” Janet chirped.
The owl as though understood Janet’s words, gave a soft hoot of joy and flew off the chirpy young wizard’s shoulder onto Janet’s shoulder.
“He’s cute. Can I have him, dad?” Janet eyed her father with pleading eyes.
“We’ll have him then.” David told the chirpy wizard who nods and walks into the storeroom to get a cage.
“What shall I call you?” Janet let the owl into the cage. “You are a special breed so I shall not call you typical owl names.”
“You wouldn’t know of any owl names anyway.” David joked.
“Well, what do people name their owls, then? Hoot-Hoot?” Janet suggested.
Emily and David burst into laughter, “Hoot-Hoot?”
“Whatever, I know. I shall call you Alpha. You will now be Alpha!” The owl hoots with agreement. “Come here, Alpha.” Janet opens the cage door and holds out her arm, the owl hops out from the cage and perch on Janet’s arm. “Oh, you’re so cute.” Janet said while hugging the little owl.

1. Harry Potter (Panda's version) - Featuring Janet Hayden - Chapter 11

The next morning, Janet woke up wondering if what that has happened yesterday was a dream, she look at her bedside table and saw the Hogwarts’ parchment lying handsomely there. Feeling extremely excited, she fold her blanket and walk downstairs for breakfast.
“Morning dear, have your breakfast.” Emily push a plate of bacon, toast and eggs towards Janet at the dining table.
“Thanks, mom.” Janet ate breakfast while she eyes her parents eagerly for more information about the wizarding world but her parents said nothing while eating breakfast or washing the dishes. Slightly disappointed, Janet moved to the living room and turned on the television. Emily sensed her daughter’s disappointment but said nothing, she winked at David and open the window, a barn owl swept pass at swooped into the living room. Janet yelped and dropped the remote when the barn owl flew pass her, she is still not used to owls flying around her. The owl perch on the arm rest of the sofa and stretch its leg out. Still startled, Janet stared at the note tie on its leg without moving.
“You are supposed to untie the note, dear.” Emily mentioned casually.
“Oh, will the owl peck or bite me?” Janet asks just in case.
“No dear, as you can see it is holding something in its beak.” David assured.
Janet looks at the owl’s beak and saw a rectangular size package dangling on a piece of string, feeling a little relieve that its beak is busy, she untied the note from the leg of the owl and read.
     Good Morning Janet,
I believe your parents have filled you in with the information regarding our world. Here I present you a little gift that will clear your worries of not being able to keep up due to your lack of knowledge towards magic. I believe your mother will be pleased to see it again.
Sincerely
Albus Dumbledore”
As she is done reading the note, the owl dropped the package on her lap and flew off. Janet pick up the package and pull off the brown wrapping paper off, a brown notebook fell onto her lap. Emily squealed when she saw the notebook.
“What is it?” startled by her mother’s squeal, Janet hold still thinking that the notebook is going to explode if she moves.
“That, is mine.” Emily points at the scarlet notebook lying on Janet’s lap.
“Oh, you don’t have to squeal like that. I thought it was going to explode.” Janet replied with a certain annoyance in her tone.
“Things won’t just explode,” David explain.
“How am I supposed to know? I’m still not used to all these magic stuff, I just react base on instinct.” Janet explained defensively.
“Alright, you’ll get used to it. Who sent you that notebook?” David tried changing the topic.
“Albus Dumbledore.” Janet read from the note.
“Professor Dumbledore kept my notebook; I left it at our old house before we move here. Janet, this will be able to help you get through classes, it has all my notes about everything you are going to learn in Hogwarts.” Emily explains with excitement.
Janet flips through the notebook and saw words like “Locomotor”, “Accio” and a whole lot of terms that she has never came across before, “It sure looks different. What is taught there.”
“You will get through it. Don’t worry too much.” Emily gave a confident pat on Janet’s shoulder.

1. Harry Potter (Panda's version) - Featuring Janet Hayden - Chapter 10

“Really? I can decide where to go?”
“Of course you can. I think you are old enough to make your own decisions and be responsible for them. Besides, now I have an explanation on why the cockroaches just disappeared from your room.”
“You mean they didn’t escape through a hole from the corner of my room?”
“There weren’t any holes in your room. We couldn’t think of a better answer, we can’t just tell you that you could make things disappear, could we?”
“Oh, no wonder I couldn’t find any holes and I swear those cockroaches will just disappear after I blink, I didn’t see them crawling off elsewhere.”
“I used to make the crease on my shirts disappear to save the hassle of ironing.” Emily said cheekily.
“What? You have been doing that all these while? And you said I have iron my own clothes when I go to high school.” Janet exclaimed.
“I stop doing that since we start our muggle life. I think we are the most successful wizard family who adapted to the muggle life. I think muggles will never sense anything different from us and people from our kind will even look us off as muggles.” Emily says proudly, it is true that they had made great efforts to learn how to be a muggle as they were both from wizard families. David’s sister-in-law, your Aunt Carol is a muggle which gave a whole lot of advise on their home decoration to keep it as muggle-ish possible. The rest are mostly things they learn from the television, in their opinion, the greatest invention of the muggles.
     “About your school, Hogwarts?”
     “What about it?”
“What is it like? Do they have normal classes? Or something else? What do you do and learn there?” There are so many questions swarming within Janet’s mind and she don’t know where to start.
“It is like normal schools. We have classes, teachers, activities and even field trips to a village nearby, called Hogsmeade, a very nice place to visit besides the castle.”
“A castle? There is a castle?”
“The school is a castle. We have classrooms all over the castle for different subjects. Let me see, we have Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, Astrology…” Emily counted the subjects off her fingers.
“Woah! All of them sound interesting. What is transfiguration?”
“Oh, that’s one of my favourite subjects. We learn how to turn things into something else in Transfiguration.”
“like white handkerchiefs into pigeons?” Janet suggested excitedly.
“Better than that, we can even turn chairs into horses, hedgehogs into pin cushions and a lot of other things. It’s not like what you see on TV.”
“You need a wand to do those things, right? I saw that in the letter. It’s in the requirements. Do you have a wand?” Janet asks eagerly.
“Of course. A wand is the most important tool in the wizarding world. You won’t be a qualified wizard or witch if you don’t have a wand.”
“Do you still have it? Your wand? Can I have a look? Please.”
“Well, maybe some other time. I need to find it first. Your father and I hid our wands away from each other to prevent the urge of performing magic and end up going back to our previous lives.” Emily said, in a cheeky tone, obviously proud of herself for being able to resist the urge of using magic after all these years.
“So dad has your wand? And you have dad’s?” Janet is trying to hint that if she could not have a look at her mom’s wand, she can maybe have a glimpse of her dad’s.
“David’s wand? That reminds me. I have it here.” Emily look around the room and walks towards Janet’s toy cupboard.
“Here? You mean dad’s wand is in my room?” Janet asks.
“Yup. Let me see,” Emily opens the toy cupboard and pulls out a toy hammer. “Here it is!”
Janet peered at the toy hammer curiously and asks, “Wands look like hammers? I always thought it looks like a stick.”
“Oh,” Emily look at the toy hammer she is holding and laughs, “Wands do shape like sticks, I just did some transfiguration on your father’s wand so that he will not be tempted by the looks of it.”
“Then how do you turn it back into a wand?”
“First, I’ll need my wand.” Emily said in an extraordinarily high-pitched voice.
“Oh, ok. No rush about that. We’ll ask dad later.”

1. Harry Potter (Panda's version) Featuring Janet Hayden - Chapter 9

Anna says:
Hey! What’s with your personal message???

Anna is Janet’s best friend from school. Janet shared all her secrets with her.

Anna says:
What’s muggle anyway?

Janet says:
It does not really matters now.

Anna says:
Is something bothering you?

Janet says:
Not really.

Although Anna van der Walt is Janet’s best friend but she could not just blurt out the whole “I’m a witch and I don’t belong here” story. That is something even best friends find it hard to share.

Anna says:
There must be something. Is it about the scholarship thing? You are worried about the interview aren’t you? Don’t you worry, you’ll be alright. I bet you will.

Janet says:
Thanks.

Janet is still struggling about whether to tell Anna or not. The whole magic thing is too big for her, she got to find someone to share it with her since her parents aren’t keen on talking about it.

Anna says:
Are you alright there?

Janet says:
Yes. I’m ok.

Janet took a deep breathe and continue typing.

Janet says:
Do you believe in magic?

Anna says:
Magic? You mean those making a rabbit appear from the hat magic? I use to though but now I know there is always a trick behind it. That is why they are called magic tricks. Why do you ask?

Janet says:
No, not that magic. I mean magic powers, like witches and spells and stuff.

Anna says:
Fairy tale magic? I actually do believe in those. Between you and me, I always believe that these things exist somewhere maybe we just can’t see it.

Just as Janet was going to continue typing, there was a knock on the door.

“Who’s there?”

“It’s me. I thought you might be hungry. So I brought some pizzas up for you. Can I come in?” Emily answered behind the door.

“Ok, the door is not locked.” While answering Janet’s fingers worked themselves quickly on her keyboard.

Janet says:
Hey, chat later. Sorry, mommy biz. See u, bye!

After she finish typing, Janet quickly hit the log off button and jumped onto her bed pretending that she is busy reading the book she randomly grabbed under her bed.

Emily walks into her daughter’s bedroom and puts down the plate on her study table. She caught a glimpse of Janet’s personal message before the account was logged out. Then she saw the list of Hogwarts supplies on the table, Emily thought, “Maybe I should let her make her own decision.”

Janet continues flipping through the pages of her book so that she could be distracted from her mother’s presence.

Emily walks over to Janet’s bed and sits down beside her. “You really want to go to Hogwarts, do you?”

“I… Eh… not really. I’m ok, I’ll get over it. It’s not that Hogwarts us my one and only option, isn’t it? I have a scholarship waiting for me in Queen Anne's so I guess it won’t be any difference. Don’t worry, mom.” Janet stares blankly onto her book avoiding her mother’s eyes. It is not hard to tell that she is lying.

And, of course, Emily would not fall for what her daughter have said either. “You know what? I’ll tell you about my life and your dad’s in the magical world. After that, it’s up to you to decide whether you would lke to stick around here or go to Hogwarts.”

1. Harry Potter (Panda's version) - Featuring Janet Hayden - Chapter 8

Behind the door, Janet wipes off the tears that were swirling in her eyes and sank down beside her bed. She pulled out the letter from her pocket. “The standard book of spells, A history of Magic,” muttered Janet. It all sounds so interesting but they ere so near yet so far. Janet stood up and switch on her computer signed into her MSN and typed “stuck in muggle life” on her personal message box. “Is it spelled like that? Mugle? Magel? Muggle? Muggel? Oh, nevermind, I’ll just assume. Nobody knows anyway.”

She loads the search engine and type “The Standard book of spells”, half hoping that the whole content of the book will available on the internet or Wikipedia and maybe the real book might just be available on Ebay.

However, things like “” The Standard”, “International Standard Book Number”, “Spells – way to find your true love” and many other unrelated links but there’s no sign of “The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1) by Miranda Goshawk”.

Feeling disappointed, Janet sank down into her chair, she tried a few other book names but the results are not quite like what she has been expecting.

She closed all her search windows and stared at the blank desktop screen until a pop-up window appeared blinking on the screen.
