The Life of Orphans - Chapter 35

That night,

In Zax's room (school),

Zax: You were always smart. Can't you think of anything?

Cyndi: You come up to me all of a sudden and ask me to think about an excuse
for breaking up with me, and you want a good one?

Zax: Uh-huh.

Cyndi: Just say I dumped you.

Zax: Reason?

Cyndi: Since I’m the one dumping you, you won't know the reason so just say you
don't know.

Zax: It's better to put you at fault.

Cyndi: Hah! I'm not going to be the bad guy here. Think yourself then.

Zax: Ok, ok, fine. I'm the bad guy.

Cyndi: Since you are the bad guy, then everything is simple. Just say you liked
another girl.

Zax: You know how much my dad likes you. He'll kill me if I say that!

Cyndi: Maybe he will like Rainie more?

Zax: That's just a maybe.

Cyndi: But I want to sleep.

Zax: Sleep all you want after helping me think of something.

Cyndi: Sigh. (Yawns) Some friend I have.

The next morning,

Cyndi ended up sleeping in Zax's room all night.

Cyndi woke up and saw Zax sleeping on the chair.

Cyndi: why am I here? Oh yeah, he pulled me in here to help think for
ideas. Sigh. I'll just go change now.

She opened the door and met someone ....

Sam: Cyndi?

Cyndi: Uh? Oh, Good morning, Sam.

Sam: You just came out from Zax's room.

Cyndi: Yeah. Oh no! It's not what you are thinking.

Tony: What thing?

Cyndi: [Oh no, not another one]

Tony: Cyndi! What are you doing here in your pajamas? Don't tell me... (Eyed
Zax's room)

Cyndi: No! Nothing happened!

Tony: Come on, it's ok. We can accept.

Cyndi: No, no, no. Urgh! Never mind. I'll go change first.

After Cyndi ran off,

Tony: Our little Cyndi is getting older now.

Sam: ...

Tony: Hello?

Sam: Huh? What?

Tony: What your problem?

Sam: Nothing. I'm not hungry now. I’ll skip breakfast. You go along without me.
(Walk back to his room)

Tony: Ok. Weird. Now... I’ll go wake Jason.

Sam walked back to his room,

Sam: Why am I acting like this? Do I really have feelings for her?

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 34

On the volleyball tournament day,

Zax: I know you'll win.

Rainie: I sure hope so.

Zax: You will after all the hard work you did the past few days.

Rainie: Well, I guess so. Wish me luck.

Zax: Good luck.

After the tournament,

Zax: Haha. See I told you so.

Rainie: (smiles) I guess so.

Zax: Can I have a look?

Rainie: Sure (hand over the trophy)

Zax: (instead of the trophy, Zax grabbed her hand) There's something I always
wanted to say.

Rainie: Uh?

Zax: From the first day I met you, I think I have fallen for you.

Rainie: (stunned for words)

Zax: So, could you spare me a chance?

Rainie: I... I... don't know.

Zax: Is that a yes or a no?

Rainie: Umm....

The tournament was over and all the spectators have gone, Rainie's teammates went to the nearby restaurant to celebrate.

Zax: There's no one here. You don't have to be shy.

Rainie: I... (Nodded)

Zax: You nodded? Is that a yes?

Rainie: (nod again)

Zax: Another nod that means yes! Yes!

Rainie: Shh... Not so loud.

Zax: Who cares, there's no one here.

Rainie: Umm... Can I say something?

Zax: Huh? Anything.

Rainie: I'm kind of hungry right now.

Zax: Oh. I'm sorry. Are you going to eat with your friends?

Rainie: They can do without me.

Zax: Ok. I know there's a restaurant with good food.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 33

Sam: Doesn't Zax need company?

Cyndi: What? Even you think like that!

Sam: Why? Isn't it like that?

Cyndi: Not really.

Sam: Had a quarrel, didn't you?

Cyndi: [Do I have to do this?!] Yeah.

Sam: What did he do to you?

Cyndi: Nothing. (Looks at her watch) Hey, lunch break.

Sam: So?

Cyndi: Lunch!

Sam: I told Tony to send my lunch over.

Cyndi: You are working during lunch hours?

Sam: Yes. This is going to be my permanent job after my results are out.

Cyndi: You really don't want to continue your studies?

Sam: What's the point of continuing if I’m not really good at it? By the way, I’m
earning for you.

Cyndi: Me? Why?

Sam: We have all agree to keep the money we earn from our job for further
studies. Since I’m not going to continue mine, I’m saving it for you.

Cyndi: Really? If you think it's a bother, I can find a job myself.

Sam: If I mind that, I’ll be sure to not tell you this and push you to find a job.

Cyndi: I can I want me to. It's you guys who don't allow me to work.

Sam: Of course, you are a girl and we don't need that much money.

Cyndi: Why? Girls are not supposed to work?

Sam: It's just not safe.

Tony: Lunch!

Sam: Ahh... at last.

Tony: Am I late?

Sam: You didn't promise me a time, so I guess you're not.

Tony: I save your lunch for last because I thought I could hang around longer.

Cyndi: Am I invisible?

Tony: Oh, hi. Why are you here?

Cyndi: Because I’m bored?

Tony: Isn't Zax around?

Cyndi: He has nothing to do with me.

Tony: Huh?

Sam: (whisper to Tony) They quarreled.

Tony: oh, no wonder.

Cyndi: What?

Tony: Nothing.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 32

Zax's room,

Zax was dressing himself while humming a tune,

Zax: Hmm... Rainie... she's so cute when she smiles.

At school, the three of them (Tony, Sam and Jason) are off to work leaving Cyndi
alone in her room.

Cyndi: What can I do today? They should have some programmes at school
during the holidays. Oh yeah, I remember there is the volleyball team practice
today although I don't really know much about volleyball but it's better than
doing nothing.

Cyndi headed to the volleyball court and saw someone she never thought she would meet.

Cyndi: Zax? What are you doing here?

Zax: Can't I be here?

Cyndi: I'm asking what are you doing here not why are you here, Dumbo!

Zax: Same as you.

Cyndi: You never change.

Cyndi noticed that throughout the practice, Zax and Rainie was smiling at each
other every ten minutes.

Cyndi: Oye! New target?

Zax: what are you talking about?

Cyndi: Don't lie; it's only you and me here.

Zax: So?

Cyndi: Good taste. She's pretty.

Zax: Of course, I always have good taste.

Cyndi: (pretend to puke) You? Good taste? Hah!

Zax: Maybe when I asked you to be my "girlfriend", I was too desperate.

Cyndi: What do you mean?

Zax: Nothing. (Looking innocent)
Cyndi: Wait! Since you found your new target, can I quit being your girlfriend?

Zax: Not yet.

Cyndi: Why aren't you letting me go?

Zax: Just be more patience just for a little longer.

Cyndi: How long? It's take ages for you to chase her, and maybe you might fail.
=P

Zax: We'll see.

Cyndi: Fine. We'll see.

After the practice,

Rainie: I didn't know that you really mean to show up.

Zax: I promised you right?

Rainie: I didn't really take that as a promise. By the way, who your friend?

Zax: Oh, this is Cyndi.

Rainie: Hi, i'm Rainie Yang.

Cyndi: Cyndi Wang. Nice to meet you.

Rainie: Cyndi Wang? You are top of your whole form, right?

Cyndi: Umm... Ye... Yeah.

Rainie: The whole school is talking about you. Your results were a great surprise.

Cyndi: Really?

Zax: (trying to get Rainie's attention back to him) Rainie, where are you going later?

Rainie: Umm... Nowhere.

Zax: Had breakfast?

Rainie: Had a light one but I’m now a little hungry after the practice.

Zax: Me too. Do you mind having it together?

Rainie: Sure. Cyndi, want to join us?

Cyndi: Umm... I have eaten. You two go ahead.

Zax: Ok, then. See you.

They went off.

Cyndi: Looks like I’m alone again. I'll go visit the others at work.

At Zax's side,

Zax: so you really like volleyball?

Rainie: Yup, I love it. Do you play?

Zax: Volleyball? Not really, I play basketball.

Rainie: Oh, basketball is nice too.

Zax: What else do you like?

Rainie: You mean hobbies?

Zax: Uh.. yes.

Rainie: I don't really have any other except volleyball.

Zax: Oh, ok. You are training for a tournament right?

Rainie: Yes. It's day after tomorrow.

Zax: I'll be cheering for you.

Rainie: Thanks. (smiled)

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 31

Tony: Isn't anyone off today?

Sam: At least I’m not.

Jason: Me too.

Tony: Can't one of you take a leave for my sake? (puppy-dog eyes)

Sam: Nope, you know I’m graduating soon and I must have more money to
support my living before I found a stable job after my results are out.

Tony: ok, I understand. I'm a really considerate person. What about you, Jason?

Jason: Since you are so considerate, i should know that the restaurant has loads
of customers during the school holidays and they are short of waiters.

Sam: Wow! The longest sentence of the day. I must write that down. Repeat it.

Jason: Cut that. (Smacks Sam's head)

Sam: Hey! That hurts!

Tony: Oye! What about me?

Sam: What about you?

Tony: Isn't there anyone who is willing to sacrifice for me?

Jason: Maybe Cyndi will. I have not seen her since breakfast.

Sam: She's been out early and back late these few days. Wonder what's up with
her?

Tony: Does that mean that the both of you are going to work?

Sam: Or else?

Tony: You two are going to thank me for this... It's 8:07 a.m. cock-a-doodle-doo,
the both of you are seriously LATE!

Jason: Oh no! Gotta go.

Sam: Me too. Bye.

Tony: Some friends you two are. Leaving me alone here.

Cyndi: Nobody told you to take a leave today.

Tony: Why are you here?

Cyndi:Why can't I be here?

Tony: No dating today?

Cyndi: What makes you think that I’m dating?

Tony: You've not been seen for ages then.

Cyndi: I'm here now.

Tony: So?

Cyndi: I heard someone needs company here.

Tony: Is that your Zax?

Cyndi: He's not MINE!

Zax: What's the screaming for?

Tony: Hey, why are you here?

Zax: For your information, I live here.

Tony: Oh yeah I almost forgot. Or you are here for someone?

Zax: Who?

Tony: (eyed Cyndi) Someone....
Zax: Her? I see her everyday. I don't mind that. But today I’m here to visit some
friends.

Cyndi: (hit Zax) Don't crap.

Tony: (shivers) Excuse me, I’m still here.
Cyndi: You don't start thinking. We are definitely not what you are thinking.

Zax: Why not?

Cyndi kicked him furiously.

Zax: Ouch!

Tony: Wow! Cyndi, I thought girls in love are supposed to be gentle.

Cyndi: I'm not in LOVE!

Tony: I just don't understand why you don't want to admit it.

Cyndi: Because I didn't do anything, why should I admit?

Tony: It's not a secret already, you know?

Cyndi: Fine, whatever. I'm going out. See you guys later.

Tony: (after Cyndi left) What's up with the two of you? Fighting?

Zax: No idea. She's kind of moody these few days.

Tony: Then you should make her happy.

Zax: (mutters) She won't be happy until she's out of this.

Tony: Out of what?

Zax: Nothing. Let's go walk around.

As they were walking around the school compound, they saw the volleyball team
were practicing and it was the girls team.

Zax: Is that the captain? (Pointing to one of the players)

Tony: I guess so she's directing and training them.

Zax: [She's pretty.]

Tony: Hello? You can't afford to look at girls now, you know?

Zax: Why?

Tony: Because you have Cyndi. And if you hurt her none of us will let you go.

Zax: Fine. [Wonder what's her name?]

Tony: I'll go get a drink. You want some?

Zax: Ok. I'll wait for you here.

Zax at the side of the volleyball court.

Player 1: Is it my turn to go on court?

Captain: Yes. Now give it your best shot.

Player 1: Ok.

As the ball flying near to player 1, she hit it with all her might...

Player 1: Ouch!

Captain: Are you ok?

Player 1: My wrist!

Captain: Oh no. Someone please accompany her to the school clinic.

After player 1 and another player left.

Player 2: Rainie, what if she's badly hurt and can't play? The game is two days
away now and we can't do without her.

Rainie (captain): I know. Let's just hope that she's alright. Ok guys, that's all for
today.

As Rainie was taking her backpack, she didn't notice that it was not zipped, all
her belongings fell out.

Rainie: Man! (She knelt down and pick up her things)

Zax quickly went up and help her.

Rainie: Thanks.

Zax: Not at all. My name is Zax. You?

Rainie: Rainie.

Zax: [Cute name] Umm... can we be .... friends?

Rainie: Sure. You can always come and see us practice.

Zax: I will.

Rainie: See you.

Zax: Ok. When is the next practice?

Rainie: Tomorrow! 9 in the morning.

Zax: Ok. I'll be here 9 sharp.

Rainie smiled in return.

Tony came back with two cans in his hand.

Tony: Whom are you smiling to? (Looking at the direction Zax looking but saw
nothing)

Zax: Huh? Nobody.

Tony: You must be crazy.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 30

Cyndi: When is this going to end?
Zax: What?
Cyndi: Me as your girlfriend.
Zax: Why?
Cyndi: Because Sam had got it all wrong!
Zax: Sam?
Cyndi: Uh! And the others too. They woke me up early in the morning just to ask me this.
Zax: How did they know?
Cyndi: Jason, duh.
Zax: I know. But Jason won't really tell anybody something unless he's asked.
Cyndi: Maybe somebody else saw us.
Zax: Who?
Cyndi: How should I know? By the way, where's your dad?
Zax: He went to the clinic for checkup.
Cyndi: Aren't you supposed to go with him?
Zax: He said that I don't have to. She can go with him.
Cyndi: She? Can't you call her something instead of "she", "her".
Zax: What do you expect me to call her? Mom? No way! She's not even MY MOM, ok?
Cyndi: Fine, fine. I'm not in mood to quarrel with you.
Just then, Zax's dad was screaming from downstairs,
ZD: I have good news! Come on down, the both of you.
Zax: How did he know that we are upstairs?
Cyndi: Because we are not downstairs, Dumbo.
Zax: I mean can't he thought that we went out or something?
Cyndi: Because our shoes are still outside, Dumbo.
Zax: Stop calling me Dumbo!
ZD: You know what the doctor told me today?
Zax: What?
ZD: My condition isn't that serious anymore. I even have the chance to recover completely.
Zax: Oh, how did that happen?
ZD: The doctor said that it might be due to my cheerfulness all this while with the two of you.
Zax: Oh. That's good news.
Cyndi: Congratulations uncle.
ZD: I should thank you because if it's not for you I may not have today.
Cyndi: I didn't do anything. [Except for acting in front of you]
ZD: The doctor said I’m a lucky man to have such miracle happening to me.
Zax: Yup, very lucky. So, what now?
ZD: I still have to go for the checkups and take my medicine accordingly. I really want to recover and attend your graduation and also your university graduation. And not forgetting, your wedding.
Zax and Cyndi stopped smiling upon hearing the words "wedding".
Zax: Umm... Dad. Cyndi and I will not be home for lunch later.
ZD: Ok, enjoy yourselves.
Zax: We will.
Cyndi: See you, uncle.
Outside the house,
Cyndi: It's not that I’m not happy for your dad about his chances of recovery but how are we going to explain to him about all this?
Zax: You're asking me? I'm just as puzzled as you are.
Cyndi: I have an idea here. Why don't you find a REAL girlfriend instead and break up with me? That will do all the explaining.
Zax: But can't you see how much dad likes you? He'll get me if I dumped you.
Cyndi: Then I’ll be the one dumping you.
Zax: Then my dad will be sure to say that it's my fault and bla bla bla.
Cyndi: Then find a girl better than me. I bet there are loads out there.
Zax: I know that. It's obvious.
Cyndi: Oye! What do you mean?
Zax: That's means there are loads of better girls out there, Dumbo.
Cyndi: Dumbo is you not me. Please remember your name.
Zax: Fine. Where should we go now?
Cyndi: (had a sudden thought of something) Hey! Since your dad is recovering soon, can I tell him now?
Zax: Who?
Cyndi: Sam! .... and the rest of course.
Zax: Admit it that you like Sam.
Cyndi: Then you admit it that you like Hebe!
Zax: What? Why do you have to mention her name all of a sudden?
Cyndi: Because I can see that you like her but I should advise you to find another target.
Zax: Why?
Cyndi: Because you'll be disappointed.
Zax: Why should I?
Cyndi: Use your common sense, Dumbo! If someone you like, like another person, will you be disappointed?
Zax: I change my target then.
Cyndi: You should be serious in this matter. You can just see one and like one and forget about it just like that.
Zax: Then? What do you want me to do? Sit down and cry?
Cyndi: Whatever. You show a little sincerity when you really like a girl.
Zax: I thought you said that she liked someone else already?
Cyndi: Nevermind. By the way, you haven't answer me yet. Can I tell him... them about you and me?
Zax: Not yet.
Cyndi: Why?
Zax: Wait till I find someone who could really replace you.
Cyndi: You mean a real girlfriend?
Zax: Uh-huh.
Cyndi: This will take ages.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 29

Cyndi: Umm... eat?
Jason: Yeah, why aren't you eating Sam?
Sam: I don't feel like eating.
Cyndi: Are you alright?
Sam: Yup, I’m ok.
Cyndi: Then eat a little. You have to go to work later.
Sam: Ok. (Took a bite) I think I’ll go back to my room first. (Got up and left)
Jason: What's up with him?
Tony: Something you wouldn't want to know.
Jason: Ok.
Tony: Hey! Doesn't your curiosity tickle you?
Jason: Huh?
Tony: Aren't you concerned?
Jason: I am but since you don't want to talk, fine then.
Tony: Sigh.
Cyndi: I'm full. See you guys later. (Ran off before they could say anything)
Jason: The both of them are acting pretty weird this morning.
Tony: You won't want to know why. It is a complicated matter.
Jason: Ok. (munch his sandwich)
Tony: Sigh. You never change.
Cyndi was rushing to Sam's room,
Cyndi: (knocks)
Sam: Come in the door isn't locked.
Cyndi: (open the door and went in) Are you ok?
Sam: Yeah.
Cyndi: Brought some sandwiches for you in case you are hungry.
Sam: Thanks. Leave them on the table.
Cyndi: What's bothering you?
Sam: Nothing.
Cyndi: You can't lie to me.
Sam: Let's forget about that. Well... I'm also curious about you and Zax.
Cyndi: him and me? It's not what you think. I can't tell you the real thing but I’ll tell you as soon as I can, ok?
Sam: I don't mind you two together. By the way, the both of you make a cute couple.
Cyndi: No. We... never mind. [Why can't you understand?!]
Sam: [Although I don't really like the idea of you coupling with Zax but if that's what make you happy then that it is. I really don't mind... or maybe I do?]

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 28

That night, Cyndi reached her room and open her door as quiet as she could.
Cyndi: Why am I so scared? The guys are not allowed in the girls’ dormitory during the night. Phew. Then, I don't have to worry so much. (Yawns) Tired. Go to sleep now and leave all the thinking for tomorrow.
Next morning,
Someone knocking on Cyndi's room door,
Cyndi: (half asleep) Why so early in the morning? I still want to sleep.
More knocking on the door,
Cyndi: Argh! People still need sleep here. (Cover her head with her pillow)
Tony: Cyndi Wang Xin Ling! If you're not going to open the door, we are still coming in. (feels the side of the door)
Cyndi always kept an extra key in a hole/slot at the side of her room door to prevent her from getting stuck outside when she forgotten about her keys.
Tony unlocked the door and the three of them went in.
Jason: Oye! Wake up!
Sam: If she still wants to sleep let her sleep.
Tony: Don't you want to know how they got together?
Sam: Umm... [I don't mind not knowing anyway I don't think I want to know either]
Jason: I know you are hiding from us. Wake up and explain.
Tony: Yup. You should tell us that you had a boyfriend especially it's someone we know.
Cyndi: (from under her pillow) I don't have a boyfriend and I want to sleep.
Sam: Let her sleep then.
Tony: Don't spoil the whole thing.
Cyndi: Tony, you are like Zax now.
Tony: You are siding him now?
Cyndi: Nope, I’m just saying that he influenced you.
Jason: How did the two of you started?
Cyndi: Start what?
Tony: Don't act.
Cyndi: It's actually not like what you see.
Sam: Then?
Cyndi: About him, and me it's not what you guys think. I can't say it now, I promised I’ll explain when it's time. It's really not actually true.
She's actually explaining to Sam.
Tony: When's the time? Marriage?
Cyndi: Come on. I'll tell you everything I can when I’m able to, ok?
Sam: Ok. You're still tired right?
Cyndi: Nope, I’m awake now because of some people. (Glared at Tony)
Tony: What did I do? (Acting innocent)
Cyndi: Do you guys need to work? or we'll have breakfast together?
Sam: Fine with me. We'll see you in five minutes.
Cyndi: Ok.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 27

Sam: What!
Tony: Wow! Calm down.
Sam: Cyndi and Zax?
Tony: Yup, I saw it with my very own eyes.
Sam: No way! It might be a mistake.
Tony: I have perfect eyesight and it's so obvious about it. Cyndi's been back late at night these few days.
Sam: It can't be. [ Why am I like this? Why can't I take it? Why do I feel so..... not comfortable?]
Tony: Hello? So?
Sam: What?
Tony: We're going to have fun tonight. (Smirks) I just hope that Cyndi will come back earlier.
Sam: you told Jason already?
Tony: Not yet. He wasn't even back yet.
Sam: Ok. I'll go back to my room now. See you later.
Tony: Ok. (after Sam left) Haha. I thought Cyndi used to like Sam? Maybe it was my mistake but it was so obvious. Well, I’m happy for her anyway. Hard to believe that they are together especially they always quarrel and never agree in anything. I can't wait till she gets back.
A while later, Jason came back from work,
Tony: Jason! I just have to tell you the biggest news! Something that you would never thought of.
Jason: Is it about Zax and Cyndi?
Tony: (shocked) How did you know?
Jason: I just met them. They were my customers.
Tony: What!
Jason: Just now...

In the restaurant,
Cyndi: Are you sure this will work?
Zax: I think so. If someone can't see our eyes that means he might can't identify us.
Cyndi: You and your lame logic again.
Zax: If you think it's so lame then take off your sunglasses.
Cyndi: Fine. (Took them off)
Zax: Oye! You really took them off.
Cyndi: I accept your dare. See who wins?
Zax: Ok, ok. You win. Don't kid around, ok?
ZD: Hey! Are you two going in?
Zax: Coming! Now, put those back on.
Cyndi: Why do I have to listen to you?
Zax: Fine then. Please?
Cyndi: You owe me a lot for this.Zax: Ok, whatever you say.
Waiter: Are you going to order now?
ZD: Yes, we are.
Just then Zax and Cyndi sat down.
Zax: Just our luck, why does he have to serve us?
Cyndi: Oh my god! Aren’t there any other waiters here?
ZD: My son was once a worker here. He will take the orders. (points to Zax)
Zax: Oh no.
Jason walks over to Zax,
Jason: So, may I have your orders?
Zax: Ok then. (Trying to make his voice as deep as possible and Cyndi couldn't help giggling because of that.) We'll have ..... (Glared at Cyndi and gave her a don't-laugh look)
Jason: [This guy and the girl beside him looks awfully familiar, wonder why are they dress up like that?] Excuse me, sir. Can you take your hat off?
Zax: Why? Hats are allowed in this restaurant. (this time in his normal voice)
Jason: Zax?
Zax: [Oh no.] Who? (Deep voice again)
Jason: You can't fool me, Zax.
Zax: You got the wrong guy here.
Jason: If that's so I’m sorry. Cyndi, remember to go back in time.
Cyndi: I will. [ Ahh! why did i answer?!]
Jason: Ok. (smiles cheekily)
Zax: Why do you have to answer him?
Cyndi: I did it on accident. I don't expect him to be so smart to trick me like that.
Zax: He knows everything now.
Cyndi: The worst thing is, he don't know that we are actually not what he's thinking.
ZD: What are the two of you mumbling about?
Zax: Nothing.
Cyndi: I'm doomed when I get back.

Tony: So they were hiding it from us.
Jason: Wonder why?
Tony: We'll get the answer as soon as Cyndi gets back.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 26

Cyndi continue being Zax's "girlfriend" and a permanent visitor to his house.
Zax: Dad, Cyndi and I are going out.
ZD: Ok, we're expecting you two to come home for dinner.
Zax: We will. (Opens the door and went out)
Cyndi: So now, where are we going?
Zax: I don't know yet.
Cyndi: Then why did you say that we were going out?
Zax: Can you see dad's face? He's like wanting us to get married or something.
Cyndi: Hehe, I sensed that too.
Zax: Let's just walk around first?
Cyndi: Ok. but first can you let go your hand? We're out of the house already.
Zax: Heh. (Let go) Sorry.
Cyndi: Are you sure you don't want to tell them what is happening?
Zax: Who?
Cyndi: Tony, Sam and Jason.
Zax: Oh, I don't feel like telling them. I'll tell them when I’m ready.
Cyndi: But I always don't know what to say to them when they asked me about where have I been and who am I with.
Zax: Just say that you found yourself a boyfriend.
Cyndi: Crazy! You and your lame ideas.
Zax: What lame? I'm helping you, you know?
Cyndi: Hah! Who's helping whom?
Zax: Me helping you, of course!
Cyndi: look who's talking?
Zax: Zax Wang Ren Fu. Who else?
Cyndi: Wait!
Zax: What? Haha, you never beat me in quarrels.
Cyndi: Who said so? Look there!
Zax: Tony! What is he doing here?
Cyndi: Doing his job, of course. Sending take-aways, dumbo.
Zax: Oh no, we must not let him see us.
Cyndi: Then why are you still standing here? Let's hide somewhere! Sigh... Hard communicating with Dumbo here.
Zax: Whom are you calling Dumbo?
Cyndi: You! Who else?
Zax: You...
Tony: Hi, Zax. Long time no see.
Zax: Ah! Umm... Hi. (Turn around for Cyndi but she's no where to be seen)
Tony: Why didn't you come back and visit us? Forgotten us already?
Zax: Of course not. I was thinking of going over but ...
Tony: Busy? Nevermind. You can drop in anytime. I'm late now. See you!
Zax: ok, see you.
Cyndi: That was close.
Zax: Where have you been?
Cyndi: Hiding, Dumbo. You want us to get caught?
Zax:Of course not and can you stop calling me Dumbo?
Cyndi: Nope, because you really are Dumbo just that you can't fly.
Zax: You! (Chase her)
They didn't notice that Tony was just around the corner and saw everything.
Tony: Fancy hiding it from us. You are facing trouble tonight, Cyndi Wang. Haha, wonder what will Sam's reaction be?
-----------------------------------------------
ZD: Renfu, let's go to the restaurant you used to work for dinner?Zax: What?
ZD: The restaurant you used to work?
Zax: I know. but why there? I know lots of other restaurants.
Cyndi: Why can't we... (Suddenly remember that Jason is still working there) Yeah, there are lots of other nice restaurants everywhere.
ZD: But I want to see the place that you have been working for the past few years.
Zax: (Finds it hard to disappoint his dad) Ok.
Cyndi: (stared at him surprisingly) Ok?
Zax: Yup, get ready we are going there at seven sharp.
Cyndi: Are you serious?
Zax: Let's just hope that Jason's in the day shift.
Cyndi: But he usually worked the whole day.
Zax: Maybe he won't without me.
Cyndi: yeah right, as if you are so important. I don't understand why you don't want to tell them this? They are your friends and friends are supposed to share problems.
Zax: I just want to make this whole thing look real.
Cyndi: How do you suppose to do that? It's already a fake!
Zax: Lower your voice!
Cyndi: Oooppps... =P Sorry. Why should I care anyway? You'll just have to blurt everything out when they find out.
Later,
ZD: What's wrong with the two of you? One in sunglasses and a hat and one with sunglasses and a cap.
Cyndi and Zax looked at each other and try hard not to laugh.
ZD: Are you two that famous in that restaurant?
Zax: I thought you said you wouldn't care if they find out of not.
Cyndi: I'm always considerate. You better remember this one.
Zax: Haha. Does that mean I have to say thanks?
Cyndi: Of course, what else should you say?
Zax: That I won't thank you.
Cyndi: Dumbo!

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 25

When Zax's dad is out from the hospital.
Back at their house,
Zax: Dad, this is my girlfriend, Cyndi Wang.
Cyndi: Hi, uncle. You can call me Cyndi.
ZD: Oh, nice to meet you. Looks like my son didn't disappoint me. You really are pretty.
Cyndi: (blushed) Hehe, thanks.
Zax: She's not only pretty but smart too. She's the top of her whole form.
ZD: Really. Then you must treat her better, son.
Cyndi looked at Zax surprisingly. Zax never praised her before or even said anything good about her, they quarrel all the time.
Cyndi: [Looks like he's really serious in this daddy business]
ZD: Cyndi, since you are here. Why don't you stay for dinner?
Cyndi: Huh? (Whisper to Zax) I need to be back before 9.30.
Zax: (whisper back) I'll make sure you get back before that.
Cyndi: (nod) Ok then.
ZD: Good. So, should we go out and eat or we should stay at home?
Zax: It's up to you, dad.
ZD: Cyndi, what do you think?
Cyndi: Anything will do.
ZD: I can't make up my mind. I'm so happy that Renfu have a girlfriend. (Smiled at them)
Zax and Cyndi returned a weak smile.
At last they all went out for dinner.
ZD: So Cyndi, You know Renfu since you two were kids?
Cyndi: Yes.
ZD: Did he create any trouble for you?
Cyndi: Uh? (Zax gave a pleading look)
Zax: [Please don't say anything bad. I want to give my dad a good impression.]
Cyndi: Err... Nope.
Zax: (relieved)
Cyndi: He's a nice person.
Zax gave a thank-you look.
After dinner,
ZD: Renfu, you can send Cyndi home. Gem and I will go back ourselves.
Zax: Ok.
ZD: You have the keys right?
Zax: Umm.. (Check his pockets) Yup.
ZD: Ok then. Bye.
Zax and Cyndi: Bye.
After they left,
Cyndi: Your stepmother sure is quiet today.
Zax: Of course she is. You're the main topic today and I don't think she can find anything to pick on you.
Cyndi: Really? You've changed.
Zax: Did I?
Cyndi: Yup, you were never so kind to me.
Zax: Well, you are my "girlfriend".
Cyndi: Speaking about girlfriends. When are you going to find a real one?
Zax: You're not bad.
Cyndi: Don't joke around.
Cyndi was opening her room door when...
Tony: There you are. Boy, we were worried.
Cyndi: Why?
Sam: Miss Wang, why did you go out not informing us? We thought you were lost or something.
Cyndi: Sorry then. I went out with ... [Zax told me not to spill a word] myself.
Tony: It's ok now that you're back. Don't do that anymore, ok?
Cyndi: Ok, ok. Stop nagging.
The guys leave Cyndi's room,
Tony: Sam, don't you think that shouldn't have been that harsh on Cyndi.
Sam: Was i? But she should have told us that she was going out or anything.
Tony: Cyndi's old enough now to do what she wants to do.
Sam: What if something bad happen to her? Someone like Ray out there?
Tony: Cyndi is able to take care of herself now. She's not the little girl who cries everyday in the orphanage anymore.
Sam: Maybe she is. She really had grown.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 24

Back in Zax's room,
Zax: I'm doomed! Where can I find a girlfriend in such a short time? Who will want to be my girlfriend? I was never serious on finding one. Who do I know? Cyndi? Will she help? Hebe? Will she mind? Who should I ask first? I think I better ask Cyndi first; she's closer to me anyway. How should I ask? Another problem! AHH!
A few seconds later,
Zax: Hmm... funny. No one yelled at me. I guess she went out. (Holding his Hp) How should I say this? Cyndi, can you be my girlfriend for a few months? No way. This won't work. Should I blurt everything to her and tell her not to tell anyone? Why should I not tell anyone? I just don't want them to know. (Flipping his Hp cover) Should I call or not?
A few minutes later,
Zax: Hello? Cyndi?
Cyndi: Yes?
Zax: This is Zax.
Cyndi: Oh, hi Zax. How's life.
Zax: Fine. I need your help. Are you free now?
Cyndi: Yes.
Zax: Ok. We'll meet at xxx restaurant in half an hour.
Cyndi: Ok.
Zax: Wait!
Cyndi: What?
Zax: Don't tell anyone I called.
Cyndi: Why?
Zax: I'll tell you later.
Cyndi (puzzled) Ok.
Zax: See you then.
Cyndi: Bye. (Press the hang-up button) Weird. I was just going to spread the news that he called.
At xxx restaurant,
Cyndi: Am I late? (As she pulls the chair out and sat down)
Zax: Nope. Just in time. I don't mind anyway.
Cyndi: So what's your problem?
Zax: Can you be my girlfriend? [What am I saying?! I'm not supposed to be so straightforward!]
Cyndi: (kind of shocked) I beg your pardon?
Zax: Well, it's like this. (Paused) My dad is suffering from cancer and he hasn't got much time now. He said he might not be able to see my wedding but he hope to see my girlfriend. And i guess you know pretty well that I don't have one but I lied to him that I have one since that's the only thing I can do.
Cyndi: So you want me to be your girlfriend and meet your father?
Zax: You mind?
Cyndi: Of course I do ......... not!
Zax: Really?
Cyndi: It's not real right? I don't mind then.
Zax: Thanks!
Cyndi: We are friend since we were kids. How can I not help you?
Zax: But there's one thing. Can you don't tell anyone about this?
Cyndi: Why?
Zax: I just don't want anyone to know that my dad is sick.
Cyndi: Not even Tony, Sam and Jason?
Zax: Yes.
Cyndi: Ok then. So how's life?
Zax: Boring and with that woman yelling at me every time I do something. She always have something to say on whatever I do.
They chatted along...

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 23

Tony: It's so quiet without Zax around.
Jason: We'll be starting work this Monday; I wonder Zax will still be working?
Tony: I think he'll continue. He loves that job.
Cyndi: But his family is so rich. Do you think they will let their only long-lost son work as a waiter?
Sam: I guess Cyndi has a point there.
Tony: Maybe they will let him because he's their only-long-lost son.
Jason: I sure hope so. I can't work there alone without him guiding me what to do or say.
On Zax's side,
Zax was in his room lying on his bed,
Zax: I wonder how are they doing right now? It feels so funny without Tony nagging me, Cyndi arguing with me, forcing Jason to speak more than two sentences and betting with Sam on basketball games. Sigh. Wait a minute; I have to start work on Monday. I get to see them after all. YES!
Voice: Can you please not shout? You are not the only one in this house!
Zax: What am I doing here anyway? She's so annoying. That's even worst than before. She just dislikes whatever I do. If it's not for dad I won't be here. But wait, I'm leaving in a week's time. YES!
Voice: Oye!
Zax: SORRY! Since I’m in a good mood.
Just then there was a phone call,
Zax: She'll get that. I don't want anyone to know that I’m here.
Voice: Oye! Are you deaf? Can you hear the phone is ringing?
Zax: Who's the one deaf? (Walks out from his room and saw that his stepmother was doing a mask) I thought you were supposed to stay still when you are doing a mask? I wonder how did she shout so much and not getting a crack? (Pick up the phone) Hello?
From the phone: Hello, are you a family member of Mr. Wang?
Zax: Umm.... Yes, I am.
FTP (From the phone): Mr. Wang is now in the hospital. Can you please come over?
Zax: WHAT! I will straight away. (Hang Up)
ZSM (Zax's stepmother. Dunno what name should I give her): Can you not shout for once?
Zax: Dad is in the hospital! We have to get there quick!
ZSM: (mutters) It's not the first time, what's the rush?
Zax: OYE! Are you coming or not.
ZSM: Yes.
In the hospital,
Zax: How is he?
Doctor: His condition is not improving. I guess there isn't much time for him now. Just let him enjoy.
Zax: WHAT! He's dying?! No way! What is he suffering from?
Doctor: You don't know? It's lung cancer. And please lower your volume.
Zax: Sorry. Thanks.
Doctor: I'll leave now. You can go in.
Zax: Why didn't you tell me?!
ZSM: I thought you know.
Zax: How am I supposed to know? I just came back a few days ago!
ZSM: Oic, That's means you're not back just to inherit your father's properties?
Zax: I don't need anything from him. Is that why you always pick on me? You thought I was going to inherit dad's property? You thought I was going to get everything? Don't you?
ZSM: Isn't that what you always want? You and your mom will always be the first in his heart. What about me? After everything I did for him.
Zax: You just want his money.
ZD (Zax's Dad): Zax? You're here?
Zax: Yes, dad. I'm here. Why didn't you tell me?
ZD: I don't want you to worry.
Zax: But I’m your son, I have the right to know. Is that why you want me back so badly?
ZD: I always knew that you live in the orphanage. I didn't fetch you back because I see that you were much happier there than you were at home.
Zax: (turn to ZSM) We would like to talk alone.
ZSM: Ok. (Went out)
Zax: Dad, how are you doing these few years?
ZD: Fine.
Zax: How long had you have cancer?
ZD: Never mind that. I heard you've been doing well in school. You even made it into the school basketball team. I am really proud of you.
Zax: The doc said ...
ZD: Said I don't have much time now right? It's ok, son. It's almost time. I can't wait to see your mum.
Zax: No. I just met up with you. You can't just go and leave me here like that!
ZD: I don't really have anything to worry about except you and Gem (Zax's stepmother, just thought of the name). I really owe her a lot. I didn't really care for her since our marriage.
Zax: (mutters) I don't thinks she cares. All she cares about is money.
ZD: Can you help me look after her? She really cares about you, she cried so much when you were missing.
Zax: Really? What did she tell you?
ZD: I don't really remember but I know she's really sad and she blames herself a lot.
Zax: (mutters) Yeah right. It's her who sent me to the orphanage.
ZD: Have you found yourself a girlfriend?
Zax: (shock to that question) Huh?
ZD: I know it's a little early for you but I know I might not be able to see your wedding.
Zax: Yup. I got one. She's really pretty.
ZD: Really? When are you going to introduce her to me?
Zax: As soon as you're out of here.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 22

Cyndi saw Zax sitting alone later that day.
Cyndi: Hi.
Zax: Oh, hullo.
Cyndi: You look gloomy. Want to spill it out?
Zax: ...
Cyndi: If you don't want to it's ok.
Sam always told her if people don't want to talk about their problems just let them be. Cyndi always listens to Sam.
Zax: Ok, I’ll tell. I came to the orphanage because... I don't know how to explain.
Cyndi: It's ok. I have time.
Zax: You do but I don't. (Took a deep breath) Ok, I’m the only child in my family. My mom died because of cancer, which happened when I was 2. Then, my dad re-married to another woman. Well, I don't really like that woman but that woman hates me. She always think that it was me who made my dad misses my mom and neglecting her sometimes. When me dad is not around, she will beat me and do anything that made me suffer. Until one time my dad was going outstation for a few weeks, she took me to the orphanage and left me there. You all know that I was mischievous that time, it's because I don't want to be bullied. I thought if I started the whole thing first everyone will be scared of me and won't harm me. If it were not for you guys, I wouldn't know the feeling of having a family again.
Cyndi: So you don't want to go back?
Zax: I never thought of going back. I forgot all about my family. I much much happier at the orphanage with all of you.
Cyndi: if you didn't want to go back. Why don't you say so? They can't force you to go back if you refused.
Zax: I don't know. I don't know why I said yes. I don't hate my dad but why didn't he come looking for me since he knew I wasn't home?
Cyndi: Maybe he did but you didn't know.
Zax: I don't know what to do now. I must go back tomorrow and no turning back.
Tony: You can just go back. Feel free to come visit us sometimes.
Zax: When were you here? (Saw the others standing behind him) When were all of you here?
Sam: Since Cyndi was here. We heard everything. Sorry.
Zax: What the apology for? If I told Cyndi that means I meant to tell all of you, now I can save my energy to repeat the whole thing again.
None of them could laugh; they just gave a weak smile in return.
Zax: Why? I'm just going back. I'm not going to die, right?
Jason: But you sound like you don't really want to go.
Zax: Or is it you guys who don't want me to go?
Tony: Well, it won't be the same without you.
Zax: Nothing will change. I have to pack up now. See you guys soon. (Ran off)
Cyndi: He is unhappy but he still can afford to tell jokes.
Sam: let's just hope that he'll be happy back home.
Jason: Well, I’m not meaning to be mean or anything. Didn't he say that his stepmother hated him?
Tony: Yeah, he did say that.
Sam: I think Zax is strong enough to fight back.
The next day, Zax parents were here to pick him up.
Zax: I really don't know what to say...
Tony: What else? Good bye!
Zax: I don't feel like saying it.
Sam: Come on, Zax. It's not that you are leaving forever. You'll just go for a week and if it doesn’t suites you, you can always come back.
Cyndi: Yup, we'll always be here to welcome you.
Zax: Thanks. (Eyes watered)
Jason: Aw... Save your tears. The fearless Zax is going to cry.
Zax: What? (Rubbing his eyes) Just some sand got into my eyes..
Cyndi: Look who's here?
Hebe: (Gasping for air) I'm not late, am I?
Cyndi: Don't worry, he's still here.
Zax: Hebe? How did you know?
Hebe: Cyndi told me.
Cyndi: I thought you would like to see her if you go.
Hebe: I’m just here to say goodbye.
Zax: Thanks for rushing back for me.
Hebe: No sweat. That's what friends for, right?
Tony: No sweat? You are sweating from head to toe.
Hebe: Am I? (Wipe of her sweat with her hands) Hehe.
Jason: (handed her a packet of tissue) Here.
Hebe: Thanks. (Blushed a little)
Zax: I guess I’d better be get going.
Sam: Ok, we all hope you enjoy there.
Zax: (mutters) I hope so myself.
Tony: You were saying?
Zax: Nothing. Bye.
Everybody: Bye.
Zax got into his dad's car and left.
Tony: There he goes.
Sam: Let's go.
And all of them went back to their rooms.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 21

Jason: Are you guys going to continue the old job during the holidays?
Zax: Of course we are continuing.
Tony: Back to the old job.
Sam: (sigh)
Tony: What are you sighing for? You got the best job here!
Zax: That's right. You get to work in a sports' equipment shop. You get to be "air-conditioned".
Jason: You get to enjoy the whole day.
Sam: (thinking hard for words) Your jobs are not bad.
Zax: But if compared to yours, it's really a hard one. I have to send take-aways, have to suffer from the hot sun.
Teacher: You are Zax Wang Ren Fu, right?
Zax: Yes?
Teacher: Come with me.
Cyndi: Did something you are not supposed to?
Zax: No way.
Zax followed teacher over.
Teacher: Don't worry. There's just someone who want to meet you.
Zax: Oh. (Relieved)
The Office,
Teacher: There they are.
Zax: Ok. (There were two people back facing him)
Man: Zax!
Zax: Uh? Do i know you?
Man: How could you not know me?
Zax: (Staring at that guy, thinking hard) Dad?
Man: You remember!
Woman: So nice that we found you.
Zax: You! You are still here!
Woman: What do you mean I’m still here? I'm always here and I miss you very much.
Zax: (mutters) Yeah right.
Man: Let's go.
Zax: Go where?
Man: Back home. Where else?
Zax: Do I have to?
Man: Of course. It's your home where you grew up.
Zax: (mutters) for your information, I grew up in the orphanage.
Man: Huh?
Zax: nothing. I enjoy staying here. I don't want to go home.
Woman: But that's your home, you must go back.
Zax: Excuse me; I’m not talking to you.
Woman: (glares at him)
Man: Zax, don't you want to live with your family again?
Zax: (mutters) as if I have one.
Man: Just come home for a week?
Zax: ummm... just a week right? If that's so. I’ll go.
Man: Good. We'll pick you up tomorrow.
Zax: So soon!?
Man: Yup. See you tomorrow.
Zax went back to the group.
Sam noticed his gloomy face.
Sam: What's wrong?
Cyndi: Got into trouble. What else?
Zax: I rather am in trouble than this.
Tony: Why?
Zax: They want me to go back.
Jason: Go back where? the orphanage?
Cyndi: they are expelling you? What did you do?
Zax: No. I'm going back to my home.
Sam: Your home?
Tony: We are orphans! We don't have homes.
Cyndi: You mean you are adopted? (Starting to be concerned)
Zax: No, no. My parents came and they are taking me back.
Jason: Isn't that supposed to be good?
Zax: No, that's not good.
Sam: Why?
Zax: I don't feel like talking anymore.
Sam: Ok. Let's go back.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 20

The week before the school holidays (The long term break),
Zax: Wonder how our little "genius" did in her exams?
Cyndi: It's none of your business. You usually don't care about my results.
Sam: It's because we now know that you are not hiding your results because that they are poor.
Cyndi: (whispered to Sam) Someone failed a paper here. Stop talking about results.
Sam: Oh yeah. (Suddenly realized that and took a glimpse at Tony)
Tony: Huh? Talking about me? I'm fine. Don't worry.
Zax: Nobody is talking about you.
Tony: Nevermind. (Suddenly remembers something and walks away with his hand phone in his hand)
Cyndi: You upset him!
Zax: What did I do?
Cyndi: You are acting innocent again.
Jason: Here we go again.
Zax: Jason! (As if he just noticed him) You are here?!
Cyndi: He's always here and don't try to change to topic.
Sam: Come on, the two of you stop quarreling for once?
Cyndi: He started it.
Zax: Who started it?
Cyndi: You!
Zax: But...
Tony came running back.
Tony: Hey, guess what?
Sam: What?
Tony: I still get my old job back.
Zax: So?
Tony: Are you guys forgetting that the school holidays are near?
Zax: Oh yeah, I almost forgot.
Sam: That reminds me, I should remain my old job too and maybe find a permanent one.
Cyndi: Aren't you going to further your studies?
Sam: Naah, I'm not really good at studies. My goal is always as long as I don't fail a paper I’m happy enough. So I don't think I want to continue.
Hebe: Hi!
Cyndi: Hi!
Hebe: Planning about the holidays?
Sam: Uh-huh. What about you? Anything on during the holidays?
Hebe: I'm not sure yet. I'll have to discuss with my parents first.
Zax: That's means you're going back home?
Hebe: Yup. How about all of you? Don't you guys have to go back to the orphanage?
Cyndi: Naah, we are already "graduated" from there. We hardly go back now.
Tony: We go back there just for visits.
Hebe: Oh, I see. Then you all stay at school for the whole holidays?
Jason: We have part time jobs.
Hebe: Wow! You guys work?
Sam: is that very surprising?
Hebe: Not really. Catch you later; I’m off to see a teacher.
Tony: Ok. Bye.
After Hebe left,
Sam: We'll have to call to confirm that we remain our old job.
Jason: I agree. (Took out his hand phone)

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 19

After school,
Cyndi: How come you are walking alone? Where's Tony?
Zax: He's kind of down now.
Jason: Why?
Zax: He failed one of his papers.
Cyndi: Oh. Where is he?
Zax: He said he wanted to be alone now.
At Tony's side,Tony: How can I fail? I did study; I did all the revisions I need. Why did I have to be so careless on not reading the title thoroughly? A small stupid mistake made me fail the whole thing! How can I be so Stupid?! (Buried his head into his arms)
*Author: Tony is a person that really cares about his studies and wanted to be sucessful. So, failing a subject means failing everything to him. (That’s explains why his so upset)*
Tony is somewhere where hardly anyone passes by. But...
Someone tapped Tony on the shoulder.
Voice: Are you all right?
Tony: (whose head is still buried in his arms) Yes, I am. Please don't bother me.
The person said nothing and sat beside him.
Tony lifted up his head a little so that he could see who's sitting beside him. Then he saw that the person was looking at him so he quickly buried his head down again.
Voice: I know you are very upset but failing a subject is not end of the world yet.
Tony: What do you know? (Looked up)
Angela: As if I never failed before. This must be your first time then? I failed a hundred times more than you!
Tony: No way. If you failed before how can you be in 5A2?
*Author: The school stream students according to their academic performance. 5A(Hebe's Class) and 5A2 is the best class in Form five. *
Angela: I wasn't a bright girl. My results were like C's and D's everywhere. Until I reach high school, a friend taught me how to study and revise smartly instead of trying hard to remember everything by heart. Then, I started to achieve B's and slowly to A's.
Tony: Ni hao you heng xin.
Angela: Thanks. (Blushed a little) So, how are you feeling now?
Tony: A little better. Thanks to you.
Angela: (blushed even more) Me? I didn't do anything.
Tony: We were same class for almost a year but it's seems like I just know you or something.
Angela: Really? It's not too late yet. I don't really know a lot about you either.
Tony: So... Funny situation. We know each other for almost a year but we just get to know each other.
Angela: Since I told you my story. Why don't you tell me yours?
Tony: Me? I don't really have a story to tell. I am an orphan, I guess you knew that. There were five of us, Zax, Sam, Jason and Cyndi. You know Zax right?
Angela: Yup, I know him.
Tony: All of us grew up together. We are closer than our families.
Angela: Don't you miss your parents of family?
Tony: Not really. I was sent to the orphanage since I was very little. I don't really remember my family or how do they look like.
Angela: Oh. Well, I...
Tony: Feel that you were very lucky to have a family?
Angela: Yes! How did you know?
Tony: (smiles) I just know. But there's one thing you don't know.
Angela: What?
Tony: I'm happy with or without a family. If it's not I was an orphan, I won't get to know Zax,Sam, Jason and Cyndi. And I might won't even get to know you. I think I’m much luckier not having a family because I don't have to please anyone else but myself. Some students get good grades to pleased their parents but I do that for myself. I don't have anyone to stop me from doing anything. I have my freedom all up to myself.
Angela: (Quite shock of hearing those words) It seems like you are a nice person from inside.
Tony: What do you mean?
Angela: Well, if someone has his or her freedom all to themselves they might misuse it.
Tony: Oh, I get what you mean. I don't deny that I’m a nice guy.
Angela: Yeah right.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 18

Some boys were practicing basketball and the five of them were watching at the side of the court,
Zax: Yes! Another one! Sam, you are going to owe me $5.
Sam: Who said so? The game hasn’t over yet.
Zax: Yeah right. The red one is leading so much now. Do you think that the blue will catch up so easily?
Sam: Why not? Anything can happen!
Cyndi: That’s right. We won't know who's the winner until the game is over.
Zax: Say whatever you like. My instinct tells me that they are going to win.
Just then a player was passing the ball to a teammate but that guy missed it so the ball flew out from the court and heading to a girl.
Tony: Look out!
Girl: What? Huh? Oh no!
Tony quickly push her a side and caught the ball. Then he threw it back to a player.
Player: Sorry!
Tony: (To the girl) Are you ok?
Girl: I'm fine. Thanks.
Tony: Anytime.
After the game,
Zax: I told you they would win.
Sam: Haha. Here your $5. You'd better not spend that because I’ll be winning it back.
Zax: You can try.
Cyndi: Tony, saw you talking to a girl just now.
Tony: We are classmates. You know her too; Zax.There's nothing going on.
Cyndi: I haven't even asked anything. Why are you so freaked out?
Tony: I am?
Zax: So there is something going on, huh?
Tony: No. Nothing is on, everything is off.
Sam: What is that "everything"?
Tony: From now on I’m zipping up my mouth. You all won't get anything from me.
Zax: Someone is feeling guilty here.
Jason: Yup.
Tony: Don't you guys have anything better to say? (Sigh)
Cyndi: Who's that anyway, Zax?
Zax: Her name is Angela.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 17

In class,
Teacher: (the school bell rang) I guess that's all for today. And remember the end year exam just have one more week to go. I hope all of you are ready.
Zax: Time does fly. One more week to exam, wonder if I’m able to finish my revision in time?
Tony: You will sure be.
Zax: I hope so but I’m more anxious about the holidays after the end year exam.
Tony: I can't wait either. On the other side,
Sam: The end year exam is near now.
Cyndi: So?
Sam: Are you going to continue your game of purposely failing your papers?
Cyndi: Maybe yes maybe no.
Sam: You should be serious about this.
Cyndi: You think I should? I think that being able to control your results is a great thing.
Sam: But you should think of your future now. Just don't repeat your game anymore.
Cyndi: We'll see. (Smiles)
Jason: (blur) See what?
Cyndi: Never mind.
Jason: Huh? Ok.
Cyndi: Why are you always so blur? (Sigh)

Zax: (open the door)
Cyndi: What are you doing?
Zax: What do you think?
Cyndi: You are not studying right?
Zax: Well, I was... but I’ll take a break for a while. So, what is it?
Cyndi: Nothing much, just boring. Everyone is studying; it's so quiet all around.
Zax: Of course everyone's studying! Aren't you aware of the end year exam?
Cyndi: I didn't say that they are not supposed to study but not so much. everyone will go nuts like that.
Zax: What about the others?
Cyndi: Sam's exam result is important for him. Jason... not sure if he's studying or not. Tony? He's nuts.
Zax: Isn't he always like that?
Cyndi: Yup, that why he's N and N.
Zax: What N and N?
Cyndi: Nuts and Nagy.
Zax: Haha! Don't let him hear you saying that.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 16

Someone knock Cyndi's room door,
Cyndi: (Open the door) Hi.
Hebe: Hi, can I come in?
Cyndi: Can I say no?
Hebe: You are busy? It’s ok. I'll come another day.
Cyndi: (tug hebe's hand) I'm just kidding. Come on in.
Hebe: ...
Cyndi: So... Anything important?
Hebe: Umm... It's not very important but it's considered important also...
Cyndi: Then? Is it important or not and the most important thing is what is it?
Hebe: Can you tell me more about the guys?
Cyndi: Oh, you mean Tony and gang. That's easy job. I thought you want me to do something big.
Hebe: What big?
Cyndi: Nothing. You found the right person to ask. I know them more than anyone in this world. So, whom do you want to know?
Hebe: All of them.
Cyndi: Ok. Let's start with Tony. He's a gentleman. He'll never use his fist unless he really need to. He's a nice tempered person. Now, it's Zax. He's a naughty one when we first meet him in the orphanage he play tricks on almost everyone in the orphanage. I was one of his victim. Hehe. He put a frog into my bag and ends up being bashed up by Sam and Tony. Later then ...
Hebe: Then what?
Cyndi: He started to plan tricks on Sam but all of them failed.
Hebe: Why?
Cyndi: Jason.
Hebe: Jason?
Cyndi: Yup. He was very quiet and no one really notice him when he's around so Sam told him to keep an eye on Zax and tell him whatever he's doing. Until once, we played a trick on him and we became friends.
Hebe: Your life is fun.
Cyndi: Well, it's quite fun. Who now? Ah yes, Jason. He's a quiet person and he's straight like a stick. But you'll get use to it after you know him for a while and he'll talk to you more then. Sam, he's a great person. Always there to stand up for you. You'll feel safe when you are with him (smiles).
Hebe: I see that.
Cyndi: You see what?
Hebe: You like him, don't you?
Cyndi: Who?
Hebe: Sam.
Cyndi: I don't think so.
Hebe: How can you don't think so? It's so obvious!
Cyndi: Uh... (Thinking hard to change the topic) ... Why do you want to know so much about them? Is one of them your target?
Hebe: You can see that? Is it that obvious?
Cyndi: [I was just kidding. But since this is her reaction, I’ll act a little] Umm... quite.
Hebe: Really? Promise you won't tell anyone.
Cyndi: [I wonder which one is the one you like?? What should I say to make her spill it out herself??] Ok, I won't tell anyone. So, when did it happen?
Hebe: Umm... I’m not sure. The feeling just came.
Cyndi: [ Aaahh! Why can't you just say who's that??]
Hebe: Does he feel anything?
Cyndi: Who?
Hebe: Jason.
Cyndi: [So he's the one] I don't think so. Anyway he's a stick, you know. He won't know these things until you tell him.
Hebe: Heh. ( smile )
Cyndi: (smiles back) You want me to help you?
Hebe: How?
Cyndi: Tell him.
Hebe: No way! That's so embarrassing! What if he doesn’t like me?
Cyndi: Ok. I think if I tell him this, he might be so stunned.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 15

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 15
Someone knocks on Jason's door,

Jason: Coming! (Opens the door) You are?

Voice: Forgot me already?

Jason: Hebe Tian, right?

Hebe: Bingo. But you can just call me Hebe.

Jason: Come on in.

Hebe: Actually I’m looking for Cyndi.

Jason: You are looking for Cyndi here?

Hebe: She's not in her room so I guess she might be here.

Jason: She's not here.

Hebe: Oh. Sorry to bother you.

Jason: Wait! Since I have nothing to do, I’ll help you find her.

Hebe: Really? Thanks.

Jason: I am more familiar about the place she will be than you.

Hebe: I see that.

They went looking high and low for Cyndi but she was nowhere to be seen.

Jason: Wonder where did she go? She's usually in these places.

Hebe: Anywhere else?

Jason: Let me think first. (They pass the canteen) Hey, you want ice cream? My
treat?

Hebe: Yes. Thanks but I can pay myself.

Jason: It's ok. What do you want? (Points at the ice-cream container.)

Hebe: I'll take this. (Took one)

Jason: You like that one too? It's my favourite! (Pays the man)

Hebe: Really? What a coincidence.

As they continue looking for Cyndi.

Hebe: Am I bothering you?

Jason: Huh? No. I have nothing to do in the afternoon anyway.

Hebe: Oh.

Jason: You have ice cream on your mouth. Here. (Handed her a tissue)

Hebe: Thanks. (Start wiping furiously around her mouth) [So embarrassing]

Jason: It's not there. (Took the tissue from her hand and wipe it off for her)

Hebe: (was stunned when Jason wiped her face)

Jason: Let's go there.

Hebe: (back to reality) Uh? Ok.

After a while,

Hebe: Actually it's nothing important. Let's stop looking.

Jason: You really want to stop?

Hebe: Yeah. Sorry to bother you.

Jason: Not at all. (smiles)

Hebe: Anyway thanks for helping me.

Jason: Anytime. I will walk you back to your room.

Hebe: Ok.

They reach Hebe's room,

Hebe: I'm here.

Jason: Ok. I'll go now.

Hebe: Ok. Bye.

Jason: Bye.

Hebe alone in her room (obviously),

Hebe: Well, he's cute, caring, nice... Not bad, right? Do I like him? But I just know him. Love at first sight? Nope. I seen him before already. Love at second sight then. That's so weird. Maybe it's just a mistake. Yup, just a mistake.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 14

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 14
At the boys side,

Zax: Hey, you heard what Ray said about Cyndi? (Passes the ball to Sam)

Sam: (caught the ball) What about Cyndi?

Zax: About she was the smartest student thing.

Tony: (Caught the ball) I don't remember that. Jason, you are in the same
class with her. Don't you know that? (Threw the ball to him)

Jason: Huh? (caught the ball) I don't know. She never tell me her marks, she always says that it's very bad and then stuffed the paper into her bag.

Tony: That's it. She always says that her results were so poor that she doesn’t
want to talk about it. Right, Sam?

Sam: Huh? (Just then, Jason threw the ball towards him but he wasn't aware of
it so it knocked chest) Ouch!

Jason: Sorry! Are you ok?

Sam: I'm fine. (rubbing his chest)

Zax: What's the dream about?

Sam: What dream?

Zax: You never miss the ball.

Sam: Everyone can make a mistake.

Tony: Let's stop. Sam, what's your problem?

Sam: I... I actually know why Cyndi's lying about her results and her problem
is a serious one.

Tony: What's that?

Sam: She actually don't have any friends but us, don't you think it's a big
problem?

Zax: I thought... According to her character, she must have a lot of friends.

Jason: I don't think so; she seldom mixes with our classmates.

Tony: Maybe we should make her know more friends.

Cyndi: No need. I have friends of my own.

The guys: Whoa!

Cyndi: What?

Zax: Why are you here?

Cyndi: I'm bored, so I thought I’d just come over and look for you. So, any
programmes?

Tony: Not sure yet.

Jason: On thing for sure, we all need a bathe.

Sam: I agree. Let's go.

Cyndi: Oye, you all are going to leave me alone here?!

Zax: Then come and bathe with us. (laughs)

Cyndi: No thanks. What a stupid joke, Zax. I'll wait for you all in Jason's room.

All: Ok.

On the way to Jason room,

Voice: Cyndi!

Cyndi: Uh? Hi, Hebe.

Hebe: I just know you today and we have met three times already.

Cyndi: That means we'll be good friends.

Hebe: You can count on that. I'm in a rush now. Bye

Cyndi: Ok, bye. (after Hebe left) It's actually nice making friends, maybe what
I always thought was wrong. (Shrugs and arrived at Jason's room door) Oh
man, I didn't ask Jason for his keys!

On the guys side,

Jason: Ah!

Tony, Zax, Sam: What?

Jason: I didn't give Cyndi my keys. (holding the keys)

Zax: Don't worry; Cyndi knows her way to go in our rooms even without keys.

Tony: Yep.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 13

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 13
Cyndi was sitting near the basketball court waiting for the guys to finish their practice.

Ray: Hello, cutie.

Cyndi ignored him.

Ray: Don't you remember me? (Sat beside Cyndi)

Cyndi move further from him.

Ray: Waiting for them? (Points at the guys) Told you not to mix with them.

Cyndi: What do you care anyway?

Zax saw what happen and nudge Sam.

Zax: Sam, look. (Facing where Cyndi is)

Sam: Let's go. (Wave at Tony and Jason and points at Cyndi)

They caught the signal and went over.

Sam: What are you doing? (Grab Ray's wrist)

Cyndi quickly stood up and stand beside them

Ray: Nothing to do with you. (Struggle to get free from Sam's grab)

Tony: You are disturbing our friend here.

Ray: Oh really. Don't you all know that Cyndi is the smartest student in her
form? What's her benefit if she mixes with all of you?
Zax: What?

Ray: Don't you all know that she was top in the whole form for the past
exams?

Cyndi: Shut up. Don't listen to him.

Ray struggled off and started cursing.

Hebe: Hey you, watch your mouth!

Ray: Hebe Tian! (Turn 2 his followers) Let's go! I'll get you all next time.

All of them: [Why is he so scared of her]

Hebe: That'll teach him. Hi, my name is Hebe Tian but you can call me Hebe.
I'm from form 5A. You all?

Cyndi: Thanks for that. I'm Cyndi, This is Sam, Tony, Zax and Jason.

Hebe: Nice to meet all of you. (Her friend called) Oh, gotta go now. Meet you
guys later. Bye.

Cyndi: Bye.

Sam and Jason: Bye.

Cyndi: Helloooo? (waving in front of Tony and Zax) Anyone home?

Tony & Zax: What?

Cyndi: She's gone already.

Zax: So?

Cyndi: So... you like her eh?

Zax: Nonsense. Let's go back and practice.

The guys went back to practice. Cyndi went back to her room.

Cyndi: (sigh) The most boring place on earth: My room! (Rolling around on her
bed)

Someone knock the door.

Cyndi: They finished their practice so soon? (opened the door) It's you?

Hebe: Why? Surprised?

Cyndi: Very. How did you know this is my room?

Hebe: Simple. Just ask. Why do you look so odd?

Cyndi: Huh? Really? Maybe it's because I never have female visitors before.

Hebe: What?! You must be kidding!

Cyndi: Do I look like I’m kidding? Umm... You've been standing there for quite
a long time, would you like to come in?

Hebe: I thought you would never ask. (Went in)

Cyndi: (closes the door) By the way, what brings you here?

Hebe: I want to know more about my new friend here.

Cyndi: Uh? Oh, ok. What would you like to know?

Hebe: Everything you can tell me.

Cyndi: That is?

Hebe: Man, you really don't have many friends, do you?

Cyndi: Apart from the guys you have met just now, you are the only one.

Hebe: You are weird but never mind. If you don't know how to start then I’ll
start. What's your full name?

Cyndi: Cyndi Wang Sin Ling. You?

Hebe: Hebe Tian Fu Zhen.

There was silence for a while.

Hebe: Umm... Let's talk about your family.

Cyndi: Huh? Why don't we talk about yours first?

Hebe: Ok. My dad is a businessman, can be considered successful. He's a
boring person, other than business, he just likes to sit around and read but he's
a great dad anyway. My mom doesn't work but sometimes she'll help my
father with his business like giving some opinions and things. I'm the only
child, so it's kind of boring because I don't have anyone else to talk to.

Cyndi: Really? I see that you have lots of friends.

Hebe: Naah, those are just normal ones, i just have this feeling that they are
my friends because that my family is rich. So, i don't really have a close
friend, one that I can really count on. Let's stop talking about this, what about
your family?

Cyndi: My family? (laughs) Those guys you saw just now are my family.

Hebe: Those are your brothers?

Cyndi: Well... can be considered are.

Hebe: What do you mean?

Cyndi: I'm an orphan.

Hebe: Uh? Sorry.

Cyndi: What's the apology for?

Hebe: Mentioning about your family. You don't really want to talk about it
right?

Cyndi: The truth is I don't really know anything about them.

Hebe: It's ok anyway. Just one more thing, are they orphans too?

Cyndi: Who?

Hebe: The guys who were with you just now?

Cyndi: Oh, them. Yup, they are. We grew up together.

Hebe: Oh, no wonder they are so protective of you.

Cyndi: There's one thing I want to ask you since just now.

Hebe: Go on.

Cyndi: Why is Ray so scared of you?

Hebe: Oh, that. Well, I happened to be his mom's favourite student. His mom
always asks me about him and I don't like lying.

Cyndi: Oh, that's why he's so scared of you. Hah, now I caught his weakness.

Hebe: I got to go now. I have something on.

Cyndi: Ok, nice knowing you.(opens the door)

Hebe: You too. Bye.

Cyndi: Bye. (closes the door) Back the boring room again.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 12

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 12
The boys were talking as Cyndi came over,

Cyndi: Hello.

Boys: Hi.

Cyndi: We are missing of one person here.

Tony: Sam said he have to finish his project which is due tomorrow.

Cyndi: Oh.

Zax: I think that will take him forever because he’s short of something.

Cyndi: What thing?

Zax: If I’m not mistaken, he’s short of some information.

Cyndi: What information?

Zax: How should I know?

Cyndi: Umm… I have something on, see you guys later.

Tony: Ok, bye.

Jason: Wonder where is she going? I don’t remember that she has anything
on this afternoon.

Cyndi’s side,

Cyndi: (knocked at Sam’s door)

Sam: Who’s there? (Open the door) Oh, you. Come in.

Cyndi: I heard that you have some problem with your project. Anything I can
do to help?

Sam: I’m fine here. Thanks for your concern.

Cyndi: Then how’s the project going on?

Sam: Fine.

Cyndi: You continue with your work, don’t have to entertain me.

Sam: Ok.

Cyndi: (stood beside him and saw a stack of blank papers with a title on it)
Why didn’t you do this one first? (Pointing to the papers) This title comes first
than others.

Sam: Oh, this. I have a little problem with it. But don’t worry, I can handle it.

Cyndi: Ok. (Remembering the title) I won’t disturb you now. Bye. (Ran out)

Cyndi was muttering the title under her breath so that she won’t forget.

Tony: Hey, Cyndi! What’s the rush?

Cyndi: I know what Sam’s problem is. I’m going to the library.

Tony: I’ll go with you. (Ran up to her) Two heads are better than one.

Cyndi: Thanks.

The both of them spent the whole afternoon looking through books to get
notes and information.

Tony: Cyndi, it’s almost dinnertime.

Cyndi: I can skip dinner. You can go if you want to. I can handle this by
myself.

Tony: I’m not hungry. Let’s continue.

Two hours later,

Cyndi: The information about this sure is little but all added together plus
some I added in, it may help Sam finish his project.

Tony: Yup, I think so too.

Cyndi: Let’s go give it to him.

They passed the library counter,

Librarian: I can close the library now, right?

Tony: Yes. Sorry to trouble you.

Librarian: It’s ok. Did you two found what you want?

Cyndi: Yup, we found it.

They hurried to Sam’s room,

Sam: (open the door) Hello. What brings the two of you here?

Cyndi: Something that you really need. (Gave him a stack of papers)

Sam: Oh my god, you got the info. I thought I’d have to leave out this
particular part and throw some marks away. Thanks.

Cyndi: Not at all. We won’t bother you now. Bye.

Tony: Yeah, hope you will make full use of that. (Pointing to the papers)

Sam: You bet I will. These saved my life.

Tony: Ok, bye.

Sam: Bye.

As they walking away from Sam’s room,

Cyndi: Thanks for helping me. If it’s not for you, I might use up the whole day
looking for those.

Tony: No problem. I want to help Sam also. (Stomach growls) Ooopps!

Cyndi: Oh, I forgot you didn’t have dinner. Come over to my room, I have
some cup noodles.

Tony: Just what I need.

Later in Tony room,

Tony was writing his diary,

Dear Diary,
Today, I accompanied Cyndi to help Sam look for some information he badly needed for his project. Cyndi was really up to it; she even skipped dinner just to find that. But once she found everything, she was so happy......

Cyndi: Here you go. (pass him the cup noodles)

Tony: Thanks.

Cyndi: Your welcome. Besides, it was me who put you into this.

Tony: I don't mind anyway.

Cyndi: I know you won't. Besides, that's what brothers for.

Tony: Hehe, yeah.

Cyndi: You are the world's best big brother.

Now, I know that she was just treating me as her brother. Luckily, I didn't express my feelings to her or else it will be a hard situation. Sigh. Disappointed? A little but as long as she's happy, I’m happy. By the way, I am her big brother. =D

Tony closed his diary and went to sleep.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 11

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 11
The next morning,

(Knock Knock)

Sam: (woke up and rub his eyes) Who's that? (Open the door)

Zax: How's she?

Sam: (Look at Cyndi) Still asleep. Come in.

As they walk in, Cyndi woke up.

Tony: Did we wake you?

Cyndi: (shook her head)

Sam: How are you feeling?

Cyndi: Fine. Just the wrists are still a little painful when I bend them. (Exercise
her wrist)

Zax: A good thing it's Saturday.

Cyndi: Yeah. Or else it will be hard to write in the condition.

Tony: Then let Jason write for you.

Jason, who was dreaming all along: Huh?

Zax: You're not awake yet?

Jason: Yes, I am. I am.

Cyndi: I better go back to my room now.

Sam: I'll go with you.

Cyndi: What? No need.

Tony: What if Ray is waiting for you there?

Cyndi: It's a night already. Doesn't he have anything better to do?

Zax: I doubt he has.

Cyndi: I can go by myself. It will sure look funny if you follow my back to my
room.

Sam: But...

Cyndi: Ok, i'll get going.

Tony: Be careful.

Cyndi: Ok. You guys are even naggier than girls.

Later then,

Tony and Jason are having a game of chess.

Zax: Don't the two of you have something better to do than playing chess? It's
so boring!

Tony: It is to you but it's not to us. Check!

Jason: Caught you. Check mate!

Tony: How can I lose again? Let's have another game.

Cyndi: Jason is a pro on chess. You'll lose again, Tony.

Tony: No way. I must win once.

Jason: Ok. Another game that is.

Zax: Argh! Another game?!

Sam: Hey, it's quite fun watching them play.

Cyndi: Yup.

Half an hour later,

Jason: Check- mate!

Tony: What? Aahh! I didn't see that one coming.

Cyndi: The three of us on you, Jason.

Sam: How can I miss that? Jason, You are really a pro.

Jason: I'm just lucky.

Tony: I give up. Let’s do something else. Zax?

Sam: Where is he?

Cyndi: (clears throat and points)

Tony: He's sleeping?

Jason: Is chess that boring?

Cyndi: To him, maybe.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 10

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 10
Zax: Hey, you know tonight the teachers are having a meeting.

Tony: Really? How did you know?

Zax: I overheard it when I passed the teachers' room. I think the students are
not suppose to know this.

Jason: So?

Cyndi: That means I can come over during the night.

Zax: Smart!

Jason: But you always come over during the night.

Cyndi: I always come in like a thief but this time, I can stay longer.

Sam: Then you should come over right after dinner.

Cyndi: I have to go back first to show my face to the prefects. They must be
extra careful because there are no teachers around.

Tony: I agree with that.

That night, Cyndi was on the way to the boys’ room when...

Ray: Hi.

Cyndi: Uh? Hello.

Ray: Where are you going?

Cyndi: There’s nothing to do with you.

Ray: Really? Let me guess.... you are going to those failures' room huh?

Cyndi: Why should you care anyway? They are not failures, if they are, then
you are the biggest one!

Ray: You look cute when you are angry. (Strokes her face)

Cyndi: Get your hands off me!

Ray: You are smart and pretty too. Why mix with those failures? You can come to my room instead.

Cyndi: No thanks. And don't call them failures!! For your information, they
are a million times better than you!

Ray: (pushed her towards the wall) No one ever talks to me like that! You better not say that I didn't treat you well before.

At the boys side,

Zax: What is taking her so long?

Tony: Yep, she should be here minutes ago.

Jason: Will she be in trouble?

Sam: I think we better go and check.

All: (Nods)

Sam: Jason, you better stay here. In case she comes.

Jason: Alright.

Tony: Let's go.

They went out and follow the route, which leads to the Cyndi's room. They
didn't see Cyndi anywhere until they heard....

Cyndi: Let go! Or I’ll scream!

Ray: Haha, scream all you like. You should have known that there are no teachers now. If the prefects come, whom do you think they will listen to? You or me?

Zax: What do you think you are doing?

Ray: Oh, the failures have arrived.

Sam: You let go of her! (Pushed him away)

Ray: So, you failures want to play rough. (Called his "followers")

They all started fighting; Ray and his friends weren't a match for them, so
they ran off.

Zax: Whom do you call failures now?

Tony: Zax, Cyndi (turned to Cyndi).

Zax: oh, yes.

Sam: Are you ok?

Cyndi: (nodded. her eyes were wet, it seems that she had cried before. Her wrists where bruised because of Ray's strong grip. Her lips were bleeding a little)

Tony: Let's take her back.

Sam took of his jacket and put it over Cyndi.

At the room,

Jason: Wow! What happened?

Tony: (looked at Cyndi) We'll tell you later.

Sam: (wipe the blood of her lip) Are you feeling ok?

Cyndi: (didn't answer, sniffs a little)

Sam: It's ok now. (Strokes her hair)

Tony: I think she'd better stay here tonight.

Zax: I agree. In case those cowards are waiting for her there.

Tony: Then we'll report this first thing in the morning.

Cyndi: No, you can't report.

Sam: Why not?

Cyndi: If we report, he'll also report that you guys were fighting. That will get all of you into big trouble.

Zax: Nothing will happen to us. He's the one who's in trouble.

Cyndi: His mom is a teacher. If he whines a little, whom do you think they will believe?

Tony: But it's not fair to you.

Cyndi: I don't mind.

Jason: Let's talk about this tomorrow.

Zax: Wait! What if he reports first?

Cyndi: He won't, trust me.

Zax: if you say so.

Jason: We'll go now, ok?

Cyndi: Ok.

After they left,

Sam: Is it painful? (Holds her wrist)

Cyndi: (shook her head)

Sam hands a drink to her,

Cyndi: Thanks.

Sam: You don't have to be scared anymore. Just lie down and close your eyes.

Cyndi: What about you?

Sam: Me? I'm a guy; I can sleep on the floor. Now, just don't worry about anything. Go to sleep, ok?

Cyndi: (obeyed)

Sam pulls up the blanket and put her hand into the blanket.

Sam: Oh my God! Her hands are freezing.

Sam rubs his hands with her's to make them warm again.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 9

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 9
After class,

Teacher: Cyndi, can you come with me?

Cyndi: Ok. (Turns to Jason) You go ahead first.

Jason: What did you do?

Cyndi: No idea. I'll find out soon.

Jason: Good luck.

Cyndi: I'm not going to die, you know.

Teacher: Come on, Cyndi.

In the teacher's room,

Teacher: Cyndi Wang, do you know that the end year exam is just around the
corner?

Cyndi: Yes, I do.

Teacher: I was looking through your report card and I found something very interesting.

Cyndi: Really?

Teacher: Since you were in high school your results run in a very strange rotation.

Cyndi: Meaning?

Teacher: Our school has four exams in a year. Your results in the first three
exams were outstanding but when it comes to the end year exam, your results will suddenly drop. May I know why?

Cyndi: The end year exam's questions are usually harder than the ones before, it's not strange.

Teacher: But this happens every year. You can't tell me that it's hard every year?

Cyndi: It is.

Teacher: That doesn't make sense. You know that the end year exam are the most important exam throughout the whole year, it will decide what class you are going to be in next year. With your first three exam's results, you are certainly qualified to be in the first class.

Cyndi: That's why. Because my results during the first three exams were good, I got over-confidence and seldom study. That’s the reason why my results drop.

Teacher: If you have any problems, you can share it with me. I might be able to help you.

Cyndi: No, nothing's wrong.

Teacher: I know that you are an orphan and you may have some problems that you can't settle by yourself. Maybe I can help you.

Cyndi: No. Really. There's no problem at all. It’s just a coincidence.

Teacher: Ok, since you don't want to talk about it, I won't force you. But you can tell me when you are ready to share.

Cyndi: Ok teacher, I’ll tell you, as soon I know what's wrong. (Nodding)

Teacher: Ok, you can go now.

Cyndi: Thanks. (Runs off)

The teacher sitting on the opposite heard everything and said

Teacher B (can't think of anything else): That's Cyndi Wang right?

Teacher A (Cyndi's Form teacher, the one talking to her just now): Yes.

Teacher B: She's a strange student. I was her class teacher last year.

Teacher A: I just don't understand. If she did well in her end year exams, she will certainly be top student.

Teacher B: She's an orphan; we won't understand their thoughts since we are not.

Teacher A: I guess you are right. I just hope she will change.

Well, someone overheard the conversation between Cyndi and her teacher and the conversation between the two teachers. He quickly walked out to catch up with Cyndi.

Sam (ahh.. I revealed the answer): Cyndi!

Cyndi: Hello, Sam.

Sam: Have time to talk?

Cyndi: Umm... Ok.

Sam: I heard everything.

Cyndi: Huh?

Sam: At the teacher room just now.

Cyndi: Oh that. So?

Sam: What is the problem?

Cyndi: Since you heard everything. You should have heard my answer.

Sam: I know you since you were a kid, I can tell whether you are lying or not.

Cyndi: Wow, you are creepy. You know when I lied to you?

Sam: Don't change the topic. We were friends since we were kids. We are even closer than our own family. I think there's nothing you can't share with me.

Cyndi: Of course we are closer than our families.

Sam: Are you going to answer my question?

Cyndi: Ok, fine. I did that because I want to be in the same class with Jason.

Sam: Jason? You mean you like Jason?

Cyndi: What do you mean? He's my only friend in class.

Sam: Oh, nothing. (Relieved) Don't you have other friends?

Cyndi: Apart from the four of you, I don't think so.

Sam: What!

Cyndi: What so surprising? I don't mind. You guys are enough as friends or family.

Sam: But you are a smart girl. Don't you think it's a waste if you do that?

Cyndi: Don't worry. I'll do better during my "hui kao" {an exam which you take
when you are in form 5}

Sam: You will have a bright future if you study well.

Cyndi: That one, I know.

Sam: I didn't know that you were so smart.

Cyndi: That means you don't know me well enough.

Sam: Oh really? Or is that because you always make up that your exam results were very bad and don't want to talk about it?

Cyndi: I thought you said you'd always know when I lied?

Sam: Of course, I do. I just don't want to break your lies and make you embarrassed.

Cyndi: Hah! Lame excuse. (Hits him at the back of the head and runs)

Sam: Ouch! I'll get you for this! (Chase after her)

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 8

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 8

Tony: Zax was absent today.

Cyndi: So?

Tony: Do you mind to go and check on him to see what is wrong?

Cyndi: Why me? Can't you call Jason?

Jason: We have basketball practice.

Cyndi: [Basketball again, is that all you guys think about?] Fine.

Sam: We'll go over as soon as the practice is over.

Cyndi: You'd better be.

So, I went to Zax's room and knocked the door but no one answered.

Cyndi: (knocking the door) Zax! It's me, Cyndi. [What is he doing in there?]

I tried to peek in through the window but the curtains were closed.

Cyndi: Maybe something went wrong.

I went to the back of his room and opened the window then climbed through. I saw Zax was lying in bed and his face was pale. So, I went over.

Cyndi: Zax, are you ok? (He didn't wake)

I feel his forehead and jerked up at once.

Cyndi: Wow! You are boiling!

I quickly wetted a small towel and put it on his forehead. Then I rushed out to the school doctor for some fever medicine. I came back to Zax's room and change the towel. The towel was indeed warm. If I put a kettle on him it may boil.

A while later, Zax woke.

Cyndi: So, you are at last, awake.

Zax: You have been here all the while?

Cyndi: Of course I was. If it's not for me, you might have already died.

Zax: Come on, I’m sick here. Stop the cursing.

Cyndi: Sorry.

Zax: It's ok.

Cyndi: By the way, are you hungry? You didn't eat anything since morning, right?

Zax: No problem. I'm not hungry.

Cyndi: You must eat something. Wait for me, I’ll be right back. (Ran out)

Zax: Wow! Is it because that I’m sick or what, why is my heart beating so
furiously? I can't be in love with her; she's like a sister to me. Although we are not really a family... Ahh! All this thinking is giving me a headache! (Lies down and closes his eyes)

A few minutes later,

Cyndi: Ummm.... Zax? (Tapping him)

Zax: Uh?

Cyndi: I brought you some porridge, after you finish this, you can take your medicine and then go back to sleep, ok?

Zax: Ok.

Cyndi: How is it?

Zax: Not bad.

Cyndi: Good, that means you still can taste.

After Zax had his medicine,

Cyndi: Ok, now you can go to sleep.

Zax: But I’m not tired.

Cyndi: No, no, no, you are sick, you must rest. (Pulls up his blanket)

Zax: Come on, I slept enough already. I might not be able to sleep at night.

Cyndi: Fine, fine. (Feel his forehead) It's not so hot anymore.

Zax: Of course, I’m a strong guy.

Cyndi: Hah! Since you are ok now, I think I’ll go back now.

Zax: No!

Cyndi: Why?

Zax: [I don't want her to, I want her to stay a little longer. What should I say?]

Cyndi: Yes?

Zax: Uh? Oh, it's going to be boring if I’m alone here.

Cyndi: Oh, I see. I'll go and change then I’ll come back, ok?

Zax: Ok.

After Cyndi left,

Zax: I can't be. I can't be in love with her! I always quarrel with her since we
were kids. No way, no way. (Turn over and saw the photo which the five of them took when Jason and Cyndi was graduated from primary school) Those were the good old days.

Later that day, Sam, Tony and Jason came back from practice.

Sam: How are you?

Zax: As strong as a horse.

Cyndi: Oh really?

Tony: What's his problem?

Cyndi: Someone got high fever today. (Singsong voice)

Jason: Oh, the strong horse is sick.

Zax: Even a great big elephant can get sick.

Tony: Anyway, here's today's homework.

Zax: Aw... I’m sick here; can't I take a leave from homework?

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 7

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 7
Zax: Wow! The cheerleaders are practicing. Let's go look!

Sam: When there are pretty girls around, you'll always be the first one who saw it.

Cyndi: I agree. His eyesight wasn't so good before.

Zax: You guys want to go see or not? If not, I’ll go by myself.

Cyndi: Who said no.

Everyone walk over except Tony,

Cyndi: Hey Tony, aren't you going?

Tony: Ummm...

Cyndi: Come on. (Took Tony's hand)

Holding hands seems nothing since they are all so close but when Cyndi holds his hand he felt that his heart was beating very fast.

Tony: (blush)

Zax: Oye! What happened to you?

Tony: What?

Zax: You're blushing. Haha. What the problem? Shy of looking at the
cheerleaders?

Tony: No, I’m not. (Covering his face) Just watch what you are suppose to
watch.

Zax: Yep, don't want to miss anything.

Tony took a glimpse at Cyndi who was tiptoeing over the crowd to watch.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 6

The Life or Orphans

Chapter 6

Well, I’m now walking to Sam's room. The two so-call brothers ditched me because they wanted to go for the basketball practice. A good thing that Sam is not practicing today or else I’ll be all alone this afternoon and that's what I always hate.

I reached Sam's room and knocked at his door, Sam opened the door.

Sam: Hi, only you? Where are the others?

Cyndi: They ditched me.

Sam: Oh, poor thing. Come in.

Cyndi: Thanks.

We chatted along until its dinnertime.

During dinner,

Zax: That Ray, just because he's a teacher's son he thinks he can control the whole team; he's not even good in basketball. He just gets to join because of his mom. Urgh!

Cyndi: What did he do?

Tony: he criticizes our basketball technique saying that if we continue playing like that we won't win anything.

Sam: He kind of crossed the line this time.

Zax: Not only that... He said... Never mind.

Cyndi: What?

Sam: Since he doesn’t want to mention it, let him be.

Cyndi: Ok.

After dinner,

Cyndi: Can I go over to your room today? They seem to be in a bad mood.

Sam: Ok.

Cyndi: Thanks.

Tony: So?

Zax: What?

Tony: I mean where are we going now.

Cyndi: Back to your own rooms. You guys must have been tired after the practice. Besides, (whispers to Tony) Zax will want some time of his own to cool down.

Tony: Ok, we'll go back to our rooms.

Jason: Fine with me. I have loads of homework to do.

Yeah, yeah. I can be with Sam all alone again. I don't know why I just like to have him by my side. I feel so protected if he's with me. Well, I have this feeling since I was small. Well, who cares what feeling is that.

(Author): Since Cyndi's an orphan; she doesn’t really understand the meaning of love, the reason is... no one will explain it to her although she asked them (the guys) a hundred times! =D

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 5

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 5
Now, I’m in class. Listening to the boring teacher giving her lecture, it's not that I don't want to listen to her class but her voice is so dull and physics is my least favourite subject.

Teacher: Jason! Can you answer the question?

Jason: Huh? Umm....

Opps Jason's in trouble. If only I know what the question. (The teacher repeated the question) Ah, great. Easy one. I wrote the answer on my textbook as big as possible and then hold it up and move my body away from the book (Jason is sitting right behind me) so that he can see it. Luckily, Jason saw it and answered the question.

After class,

Jason: Thanks.

Cyndi: For what?

Jason: The answer. A good thing you gave it to me in time, you saved my ears. You know how the teacher likes to nag at people who don't pay attention in class.

Cyndi: Hah! You agreed too. Her class is boring.

Jason: You mean you didn't pay attention too?

Cyndi: Why should I? It's so boring, I might go to sleep because of that and end up in the principal's office after I wake up.

Jason: Haha. If you are not paying attention, how did you know the answer?

Cyndi: I have nothing to do in class, instead of listening to her nagging why don't I read through the text first.

Jason: Oh.

Tony: Hey! Jason! Cyndi!

Cyndi: Tony! Where's Zax?

Tony: You are looking for him?

Cyndi: Nope, just funny that he is not with you.

Tony: Oh, I thought the person who is always quarreling with Zax now misses him.

Cyndi: Me? Miss him? Never in my whole life! (I won't forget what he did to me when I was four. Girls really have good memory. Haha)

Tony: Anyway, if you want to know, he's at the canteen.

Cyndi: I don't care where he is. Let's go find Sam.

The Life of Orphans - Chapter 4

The Life of Orphans

Chapter 4
A couple of years later, we were studying in high school. Jason and I in form four, Tony and Zax in Form five and Sam in Form seven (second year of form six).
Our high school provides hostel so we stayed in school.

Zax: Any programs in the afternoon?

Tony: Why? Do you have any ideas?

Zax: Not really.

Cyndi: Hah! I thought you are the one full of ideas, maybe I was wrong.

Zax: Oh really? Then who thought of way for you to get here and escape without anyone noticing?

In high school, the rules were that girls were not allowed in the boys hostel after seven o'clock at night but the boys were my only friends and I will be bored to death during the night because I’m alone in my room without anyone to talk to. So, Zax thought of a way that I can go over to their room without anyone noticing and escape by climbing out the window. Since I’m small so climbing out through the window wasn't a problem for me and the route back to my room is blocked by buildings so people can hardly see me running back to my room at night.

Cyndi: Hehe, I was just kidding. Why take it so seriously?

Tony: Quit it, you two.

Someone knocking the door, Tony got up and opened it since it's his room.

Sam: Wow! Seems like everyone is here.

Cyndi: Nope, not everyone. Jason is not here.

Sam: Where is he?

Zax: No idea. Ask his classmate.

Cyndi: How should I know where is he? Although I’m his classmate doesn't mean that I’ll know whatever he's doing. Do you know what are you classmate doing now?

Tony: Do you two always have to quarrel?

Well, since Zax had played the "frog" trick on me years ago. I’m always the one quarreling with him, it's that everything he says, I will be sure to have something to answer back and if there's a chance, I won’t forget to pick on him. That's my way of Revenge. Haha.
